Bush was born on a farm four miles north of Aspinwall, Iowa, and in 1926 moved with his family to the Vail area. He worked for the Iowa Highway Commission in the late 1950s and early 1960s and then worked for the Crawford County road maintenance crew, operating a maintainer. Bush and Nina loved to travel to Washington, Oregon, Texas and various parts of Iowa to visit family and friends. They also took their motorboat to Canada and Minnesota fishing and to Okoboji fishing for bullheads. In his retirement, Bush spent time doing carpentry, and especially enjoyed making birdhouses.
