Clarence J. "Bud" Schurer was born on August 1, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from High School in Chicago and was united in marriage to Mary Gregory. They had 2 sons, Greg & Michael "Mick." About 1940 they moved to Lisle, Illinois, where he operated a gas station for a couple of years before moving on to a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa.
In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard USS LCS (L) (3) 30 (Landing Craft Support Ship) in the Battle of Okinawa and until the end of WWII in 1945 at which time he returned to his wife and sons on the farm.
After farming until 1949, they moved to Manning where they operated the Sportsman's Club (located where the Great Western Park is now located) for a short time. Clarence was then again in the service station business selling gas and doing minor repairs at a station located where Hawkeye Diesel Service was located 402 6th Street. In 1952 he moved back to Chicago and worked in that area until retiring to Southern Indiana in 1974 where he passed away on December 1, 1977.
Clarence's two sons, Greg and Michael also served in the military.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 1, 1909, to Frank and Elizabeth (Lorenz) Schurer. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his second wife, the former Lorraine Wright; two sons, Michael of Lawrence, Kansas, and Greg, of Wood River, Nebraska {their mother Mary (Gregory) Schurer is buried at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas}; one brother, Frank, of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Newell and Mrs. Margaret Fosse, both of Chicago; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Dillman-Ellis Funeral Home in Paoli, Indiana, with the Rev. John Fink officiating. The body will then be donated to the Indiana University Medical Center. Burial at Patoka Memorial Cemetery, French Lick, Indiana.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow until time of service at the funeral home.
