LAVERNE J. BALK

A funeral service for LaVerne J. Balk will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 1996, at Sacred Heart Church in Manning with Father Ralph Reinhart officiating.

Mr. Balk, 64, died Tuesday, March 26, 1996, at his home in Manning.

Lector at the Mass will be Laurie Nieland. Gift bearers will be Kimberly Balk and Joan Balk.

Casket bearers will be Rick Sloth, Randy Balk, Tim Balk, Alan Brincks, Doug Gute, and Mike Balk.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton. Military honors will be provided by the Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, both of Manning.

A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, where a prayer service and rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m.

A son of Clem and Florence (Wiskus) Balk, he was born November 24, 1931, at Willey. He attended school at Willey and Gray.

Mr. Balk served with the United States Army from 1953-55. As a young man, he worked for the Fred D. Ross Ford garage in Manning. He later worked for the Iowa State Department of Transportation out of Neola, retiring in the late 1980s.

He was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Neola and Sacred Heart Parish of Manning. Mr. Balk was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus in Templeton and held membership in the Manning American Legion.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Balk, of Carroll; brothers and sisters: Thelma Grimsman and her husband, Harry, of Carroll; Louise Sloth and her husband, Dale, of Audubon; Marlene Brincks and her husband, Melvin, of Carroll; LeRoy Balk and his wife, Judy, of Templeton; Dorene Gute and her husband, Larry, of Carroll; Raymond Balk and his wife, Faye, of Odessa, Missouri; Gary Balk of Templeton; and Terry Balk and his wife, Nancy, of Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clem Balk; a nephew, Lynn Brincks; a great-nephew, Ryan Sloth; and a great-niece, Heather Koenig.
