Mr. Johnson was born August 21, 1931, in Harlan, Iowa, the son of Gerald Maynard an Esther Marie (Olson) Johnson. As a youth, he moved with his family to Manning. He attended Manning Schools, graduating from high school in 1949.
After graduation, he attended Sioux City College of Barbering, after which he barbered in Leeds, Iowa.
From 1952-54, Mr. Johnson served in the Army and was stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict.
After his honorable discharge, Mr. Johnson returned to the Manning area where he worked on the railroad for a short time before barbering with Joe Stein. When Mr. Stein retired, he bought the shop.
On June 7, 1958, Mr. Johnson Married Virginia Dammann at the Zion Lutheran Church. In 1960 he began working at the post office where he remained until recently when he began work at Thrifty Food.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a lifetime member of the VFW. At one time he also was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Manning; two daughters, Teresa and her husband, Doug Schroeder, of Denison, and Sonia and her husband, Lynn Nulle, of Manilla; and his father-in-law, Raymond Dammann, of Manning.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother, in infancy.
