Taking Part in a special helicopter airlift in the Hawaiian Islands are three Manning Marines. Members of the 9th Marine Regiment they are: Pvt. Donald L. Lerssen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lerssen; Pvt. James R. Wingrove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Wingrove; and Pvt. Arthur F. Zerwas.

Five Manning Youths Finish Basic Training
Donald Lerssen, James Wingrove, Jack Wagner, Art Zerwas, and Jack Mohr, Manning boys who enlisted in the Marine Corps together have completed basic training at San Diego. California. They are now spending leaves in their homes here. All except Mohr will report for foreign duty at Camp Pendleton, California. He will report at another California camp.

Arthur Zerwas, age 81, of Manning and formerly of Westside, died Monday, morning, July 10, 2017, at Char-Mac Assisted Living in Manning.

Arthur, son of Leroy "Dick" and Rita (Dinges) Zerwas, was born December 12, 1935, at home in Manning, Iowa. Art graduated from Manning High School in 1954, then from 1954 to 1957 he served in the United States Marine Corps.

Art was united in marriage with Sharon Neiderfrank. A daughter Kristine was born to this union. Art and Sharon later divorced.

Art worked for the telephone company in Whittier, California. On June 9, 1975, Art was united in marriage with Mary Jensen in Las Vegas. They returned to Iowa and purchased the telephone company in Westside from Arthur's father. Following Art's retirement he worked as a consultant.

He enjoyed corresponding with his friends on the internet and visiting outside. Art was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Art had been living in Westside until very recently when he moved to Char-Mac of Manning. He died there on Monday, July 10, 2017, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 28 days.

Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Mary and Sharon, the mother of his daughter.

Art is survived by his daughter Kristine Jordal and grandson Luke, both of Mentone, California; siblings Richard "Dick" Zerwas and wife Donna of Commerce Township, Michigan; Larry Zerwas and wife Carole of Elkhorn, Wisconsin; and Mary and husband Lee Alday of Bellevue, Nebraska; an aunt Rita Zerwas of Manning and many nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.
