Obituaries
Unfortunately, for many Veterans, all we'll end up getting/finding is an obituary. Most obituaries will give a brief overview of that Veterans' service and is sad that families probably won't have much more. Having an obituary is better than nothing and if that is all you have please submit it.
Obituary: George William Nissen, 83, of Manning died Saturday morning in Carroll (1977).
Services were held Tuesday and Zion Lutheran Church in Manning with the Rev. Edward F. Heinicke officiating. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery under the direction of the Ohde Funeral Home, Manning. Military honors were by the American Legion Post and V.F.W. in Manning.
Mr. Nissen, son of John and Louise (Kruse) Nissen, was born June 17, 1893, in Crawford County. He entered the U.S. Army on September 21, 1917, and served during World War I. He fought in four battles and on November 13, 1918, was wounded and later awarded the Purple Heart. After his discharge, he returned home and on April 4, 1923, he was married to Hilda Opperman. They made their home on a farm three miles west of Manning where they resided until their retirement in October 1958 and moved to 423 Ann Street, Manning. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, and a charter member of the V.F.W. Post, Manning.
Surviving are his wife, Hilda; two children, Roger Nissen of Carroll and Mrs. Velie (Rita) Saunders of Manning; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Alma Schroeder of Aspinwall, Mrs. Minnie Nissen and Mrs. Rose Gordon, both of Fairmont, Minnesota, John and Charles Nissen of Manning.
If we don't have much military information about a Veteran we'll use old family pictures which will help connect that Veteran to the larger family tree.
This is the only image I have of George in his military uniform. It was scanned from the Veteran section of the 1982 Aspinwall Centennial history book. Hopefully we will find an actual original picture to scan and use in the Manning Veterans' history book.
