Louis J. "Louie" Muhlbauer, 68, a former legislator in the Iowa House of Representatives, died unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his residence.
Services were held Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Manilla. The Ohde Funeral Home of Manning handled arrangements. Mr. Muhlbauer was born June 26, 1929, near Halbur, Iowa, the son of Charles and Mary (Stoberl) Muhlbauer. He graduated from Manning High School in 1947 and attended Westmar College for a year. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University in 1950.

He married Phyllis Kerkhoff on June 12, 1950, in Templeton, Iowa.

He taught vocational agriculture for three years at Manning High School and taught government and industrial arts for one year at Viola Township School. For three years, he was the department poultry supervisor at Priebe & Sons Hatchery. He was a livestock and crop farmer for 28 years in the Audubon, Iowa, and Manning area.

Mr. Muhlbauer served as a Crawford County supervisor for four years. In 1982, he was elected to his first term as state representative in the Iowa House. He continued to serve this office through 1992. While in office he rose to the rank of assistant majority leader. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish of Manilla, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus-Council 2074, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and Polka Klub of Iowa and was vice president of the Manilla Area Historical Association.
He took great pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed training horses.

Survivors include his wife; six sons and their wives, Daryl and Karen of Atlantic, Iowa, Gary and Tammy, Daniel and Patti and Jeffrey and Marie, all of Manilla, Michael and Theresa of Lewis, Iowa, and Thomas and Lisa of Griswold, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Russell Baker of LaVista, Neb., Joyce and Garry Price of Mifflintown, Penn., and Donna and Thomas Rohe of Le Mars, Iowa; 38 grandchildren; and two sisters and their husbands, Marie and Victor Wendt of Carroll, Iowa, and Rose Anne and Wes Nulle of Manning.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Samuel Louis Muhlbauer, in infancy; six brothers, Charles Jr., Henry, Joseph, in infancy, Joseph, Anthony, and William "Bill" Muhlbauer; and a sister, Sophia Kuhse.
