ARLENE AND MELVIN MEIER

Melvin, son of Joe and Anna Meier, was born December 7, 1935, at Templeton, Iowa. He was educated in the Manning Community School System. He served in the military from 1958 to 1960. He was married to Arlene Steffes on June 8, 1963.

Arlene, daughter of John and Anna Steffes, was born October 29, 1940, at Roselle. She was educated at Roselle and Kuemper Catholic High School. After our marriage in 1963, we resided in Carroll for five years, during which time Melvin was employed as a carpenter. Our son, Steven, was born on September 9, 1964, and sons, James and Jeffrey, were born on November 2, 1966.

In March 1968 we moved to a farm south of Manning where we were engaged in farming until 1983. In 1983 we purchased a home in Manning at 1018 Center Street. Since 1980 Arlene has been employed at K Mart in Carroll, and Melvin has been employed at the Manning Community School. We are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Arlene is active in the Sacred Heart Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Melvin is a member of the volunteer fire department.

MARIE AND DAN MCGRATH

Dan McGrath was born in Soldier Township and was a carpenter. In Manning he worked as a carpenter, foreman, and salesman for the Dultmeier Mfg. Co.

Marie Moser was born in Marne, Iowa, and was a rural school teacher. They were married in June of 1912. Four children were born of this union: Ralph Harding, deceased in 1972; Helen Frances, deceased in 1985; Mary Louise, who became a registered nurse, retiring in 1990; and Robert Norman, who was active in selling concrete, retired in 1991, and is living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Marie McGrath was also a correspondent for several newspapers and active in civic affairs, namely, American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and Eastern Star. She also helped found the first library in Manning.

Robert married Janet Bonneson in September, 1952. They have one daughter. Ralph married Lorane Kahler of Denison in 1941. They had two daughters. Helen married Raymond Pratt, and they had one daughter and three sons. Mary married Arved Stang[ and they are the parents of two daughters and four sons.

Donald, Julie Ann, David John, Patricia.

Donald Ray Mohr and Patricia Jane Forke were united in marriage on March 3, 1962. They made their home in Manning. They have two children Julie Ann, born in 1963, and David John, born in 1968.

Julie graduated from Manning High School in 1982 and from Des Moines Area Community College in 1984. She is currently employed with the State of Iowa Division of Banking as a Bank Examiner Ill. Julie and Michael Wiederin were married on June 8, 1990. They live on a farm near Carroll, and Michael is a tool and die maker for General Electric in Carroll. They have a son, Alex Michael, born on May 23, 1991. Upon graduating from Manning High School in 1987, David attended Creighton University in Omaha, where he studied accounting, was a walk-on for the Creighton BIueJay's basketball team, and graduated in 1991. He is currently employed as an accountant for Allied Oil and Supply in Omaha, Nebraska. After experiencing health problems for several years, Don died on January 2, 1991, at the age of 60 years.

Pat holds the position as cashier at Manning Trust and Savings Bank, where she has been employed for the past twenty-eight years.

CAROL AND LARRY MUHLBAUER

Larry and Carol (Hansen) Muhlbauer farm near Manning and besides farming Larry is on the board of directors for the Aspinwall Co-op. Carol has been working for E.T. Video since July, 1991.

Sherri graduated in 1983 from Manning High School and attended one year of college at the University of Iowa. She worked at Susie's in the Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines and then started working for the Norwest Bank. She has been there eight years and is a personal banking officer.

Sherri married Ken Wagler, October 7, 1990. Ken is a manager in Rock Island, Illinois, for Horst-Zimmerman Car Dealership. They now reside in Davenport.

Keith graduated from the Manning High School in 1984, and married Ging Jahn on June 15, 1985. They farm Keith's grandparents' farm (Marvin Hansen) and works for Glen Ahrendsen. Ging works for the Gary Knueven Insurance firm. They have three children: Kristina 7, Anna 4, and Maria, 13 months.

Amy, thirteen years old, attends Manning Community School. She is in the eighth grade and participates in band, future problem solving, basketball, and golf, and collects football cards.

IDA AND JOHN MUSFELDT JR.

John Musfeldt Jr., son of John and Minnie Musfeldt of Manning and Ida Schoenjahn, daughter of L.L. (Fay) and Lizzie Schoenjahn of Westside, were married at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning on January 19, 1939.

John and Ida farmed north of Manning for most of their married life. They moved to Manning in 1969 where John (often known as Johnnie) worked at MJM Enterprises until his death in January 1978.

Three children were born to John and Ida: Jay, Betsy, and Phillip.

Jay and his wife, Julie, live in Salem, Oregon. They have two children, Melissa and Robert.

Betsy Precise and her husband, Leon, live in Birmingham, Alabama. They have two children, John and Scott.

Phillip and his wife, Cheryl, live in Richardson, Texas. They have one child, Joel.

IOLA AND WILLIAM MUHLBAUER

This in an update of the families of William and Iola O'Tool Muhlbauer.

Allen is the oldest son. He married Paula Warner on August 10, 1974, at Manning. Their children are: Bryan, born December 21, 1974; Brenda, born March 29, 1977; Beth Ann, born July 10, 1980; and Bradley, born November 8, 1991.

Their only daughter, Lois, married Robert McCarty of Peterson, Iowa, on September 4, 1971. Their children are: Jennifer, born February 23, 1974; Chad, born January 23, 1976; Laura Jean, born October 12, 1978; and Alyssa, born August 6, 1983.

James and Jerri Gaer Muhlbauer were married in Manning on July 7, 1973. They have two daughters: Melinda born September 26, 1974, and Melissa, born September 23, 1976.

Leon married Denise Snyder at Carroll on April 16, 1977. Their children are Matt, born March 30, 1979; Dawn, born March 13, 1981; and Ryan, born January 8, 1984.

Dale married Gail Eischeid June 24, 1978, and they reside at Gillette, Wyoming. Their children are: Nick John, born November 2, 1978, and Jackie Jo, born December 24, 1981.

Neil and Anne Tiefenthaler were married in Manning on August 2, 1980. Their children are: Ross, born March 15, 1982; Kate, born December 5, 1984; and Tyler, born August 21, 1991.

Chris and Carla Fox of Ankeny, Iowa, were married August 12, 1988, and have no children.

JANET AND DR. P.L. MYER

Our oldest daughter, Beth, graduated from Jennie Edmundsen School of Nursing in 1982. Later that year she married Michael G. Hill, son of Wilbur and Wynona Hansen Hill of Manning. Mike is engaged in farming and Beth has worked as a R.N. at Manning General Hospital. She has been the Director of Nursing at the Manning Family Recovery Center and is presently Director of Nursing at Manning General Hospital and the Plaza. She and Mike have two daughters, Laura Beth and Jessica Lee.

Edith graduated from Boston University in 1986 with a B.S. in nursing degree, and later that year married Nicholas T. Drees, son of James and Patricia Ramsey Drees of Manning. They then moved to Chicago where Nick attended law school at the University of Chicago. There Edith worked as a nurse at the University of Chicago Hospital in the liver and kidney transplant unit and also for a time in the pediatric ward. In 1989 they moved to Sioux City where Nick served as law clerk to Federal Judge O'Brian. Edith continued her nursing career in the cardiac intensive care unit at Marian Health Center. In 1991 they moved to the Des Moines area where Nick is a Public Defender for the state of Iowa and Edith works as a R.N. in the cardiac intensive care unit at Mercy Hospital Medical Center.

Barbara attended Dana College at Blair, Nebraska. In August of 1986 she was married to Ronald Bret Hodne, son of Ronald and Sally Thompson Hodne of Manning. In 1987 she graduated from Dana College and began her studies at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines. She received her D.O. degree in 1991. She is now in her second year of Family Practice Residency at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Bret and Barbara have two sons, Nicholas Philip and Ryan John. Bret is assistant street supervisor for the city of West Des Moines and is completing his bachelors degree in public administration.

Jean is enrolled at Mercy Hospital Medical Center School of Nursing. She will complete the course of study in 1992. In 1990 she married Scott A. Schwiesow, son of Victor and Donna Winsor Schwiesow of Manning. Scott and Jean have one daughter, Chelsea Elise. Scott is manager of Movies-To-Go in West Des Moines.

Our family life was enriched by hosting two AFS students, Annette Kinsey of Great Britian, stayed with us in 1981-1982 school year. She is now married to R. Craig Nicholson and they reside in Aldershot, England. Dr. Myer and Janet attended their wedding this past summer in Banbury, England. Also in 1989 Carina Bjorndahl of Sweden stayed with our family.

Janet no longer is a teacher but stays busy with volunteer work at the hospital and the United Methodist Church and, of course, being Grandma Jan.

RUTH OHDE FAMILY

In the ten years since the Manning Centennial Ruth has continued to work as a funeral director with her brother in the Ohde Funeral Home, Inc. In 1988 Ruth was elected the first woman president of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. Shortly thereafter she was elected president of the Funeral Services of Iowa, a for-profit subsidiary of IFDA. Following the funeral service work in Iowa she served as chair, for two years, on the National Furneral Directors Association task force on women and other minorities in funeral service.

Ruth's son, Ronald Douglas Beaver, graduated from Simpson College, spent some time at Iowa State University, and was accepted in the graduate program at Stanford University's Engineering Economic Systems. He resides in Menlo Park, California.

Her daughter, Alison Anne Beaver, graduated from Manning High School and attends Simpson College where she will graduate in the spring of 1993.

1926 - Manning had six lawyers: B.I. Salinger, J.W. Lindsay, J.C. Engleman, A.T. Bennett, F.A. Bennill, Douglas Rogers. Soon after 1926 came E.A. Robb, C.C. Helmer and O.W. Emmons.

MARY AND CARSON OHM

Carson Ohm was 26 years old when he arrived in the United States in 1858 from Germany. He worked as a railroad section man in Washington, Iowa. Later he married Mary K. (no known last name), who arrived here from Germany at the age of 16 years and did housework for five years before her marriage. They had 14 children, including twins. In later years they farmed in Audubon County and retired in Manning. They purchased three acres from Hans Reimers, who owned 221/2 acres in South Manning. They built their home at 424 - 10th Street, which has been replaced with the present home of Duane Boersma, and the two circle drives there were previously a large pasture. Later their ninth child, Harry J. Ohm, purchased the Ohm three acre estate, and he and his wife, Betty (Reimers) and daughter, Dolores, (three years old) came from Chicago to live here.

Harry J. Ohm was a steel bridge worker who had worked three years in the state of Oregon and later worked in Minneapolis and Chicago. He fell at work and was unable to continue there and was under doctor's care the rest of his life. He returned to Manning. Later a son, Richard Reimer Ohm, was born in Manning.

Betty Ohm, before her marriage, worked 81/2 years for Martens' Mercantile Store located where the Manning Trust and Savings Bank is now. They operated a dairy for many years.

Their daughter, Dolores E. Ohm, graduated from Manning High School and married Edward H. Ramsey, who had the Ramsey (truck) Transfer with his brother, Mayburn, for many years. They had two sons, Leonard Edward Ramsey, in Coon Rapids, and Dennis Ohm Ramsey, who lives in Manning. They are blessed with 15 grandchildren, one, Jon E., is deceased. They also have 30 great-grandchildren, and they observed their 60th anniversary on September 8, 1992.

Their son, Richard Reimer Ohm, graduated from Manning High School and served six years in the navy, as storekeeper on the ship, Marbelhead. During World War II Franklin Roosevelt, in his radio fireside chat, stated the mother ship of our fleet in the Pacific, the Houston, was lost in a Japanese attack and her sister ship, the Marbelhead, was presumed lost, but although 70% of their crew was lost, they obtained Chinese sailors and limped around the world and arrived three months later in the New York Harbor. He died at the age of 40 years. Richard married Mary Jane Fraley, of Des Moines, and had a son, Michael Fraley Ohm, who is not married and lives in Sacremento, California, and a daughter, Michelle (Ohm) Pratt, who has four children and lives in Rocklin, California.

PHYLLIS AND BILL OPPERMAN

Bill and Phyllis were both born and raised in the Manning community. After their marriage September 7, 1952, Bill graduated from Iowa State University in 1954, and then spent two

years in the army.

Following his discharge in 1956 they moved to the farm north of Manning where they farmed until moving to town in 1992.

They have been active in the Presbyterian Church, American Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary, Masonic Lodge, P.E.O., and Homemakers Club. Bill also served a term on the Carroll County Beef Producers where he served as president.

Children are Debra, Janis, Robert, Beth, and Paul. All of the children are graduates of Manning High School. Robert and Paul of Iowa State University, Debra, Janis, and Beth from the University of Iowa.

ELIZABETH AND IVAN L. OPPERMAN

Ivan Leon Opperman was born May 31, 1925, to Emil and Mabel Opperman at their farm in the center of Section 6, Ewoldt Township.

Ivan served in World War II as a weather observer in the Philippines. After the war he went to college at Iowa State in farm operations and graduated in March, 1951.

Ivan met Elizabeth Harding at the Iowa State Fair. Elizabeth (Betty) was a contestant for the "Queen of the Land" contest and members of Ivan's fraternity, Alpha Gamma Roe, were the contestants' escorts. Ivan saw Betty and made sure he was her escort. They married on March 24, 1951, at the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ivan has been quite active in the community. He was on the Carroll County School Board in the 60's. He helped with the West Central Rural Water Association. He actively helped promote and construct the M & I Dehy in 1968, and Consoy in 1978. Ivan was the commander of the VFW i n 1965.

Betty has also been quite active. She was the president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW from July 1966-July 1967. Betty was a member of the Homemaker's Club and was also a Girl Scout leader for the junior group.

Ivan and Betty have six children: Susann, John, Emily, Jim, Valarie, and Rhonda.

Susann married Stanley Siebke on June 21, 1975. They have two daughters, Katie and Michelle. They are currently living in Urbandale, Iowa.

John married Nancy Strandberg on November 24, 1990. John and Nancy are currently farming and have one son, Jason.

Emily is currently working as a traveling medical technologist.

Jim is farming and current manager of M & I Dehy.

Valarie married Jim Roberts on September 17, 1988. They are living in Lake Zurich, Illinois. They have one son, Brian, and are expecting a boy in November.

Rhonda married Gregory Wiebers on August 9, 1986. They are living in Hudson, Iowa, and have one son, Lewis.

MAGDALINA AND JOHN D. OPPERMAN

John D. Opperman was born in Germany in 1835. He married Magdalina Theisen, who was born in Germany in 1845. They emigrated to the United States with their two children, William and Anna.

Six more children were born here: Hannes, John, Hattie, Tracy, Herman, and Harvey. All of the children married and lived in the Manning area, except Herman, who never married. Harvey died in infancy.

AUDREY AND LAVERNE OLSEN

LaVerne and Audrey (framer) Olsen were married September 29, 1944, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Irwin, Iowa. They lived in Manning where he worked at Manning Creamery Company, and Audrey worked at Thrifty Food and later as bookkeeper at Kuhl & Vogt Hardware.

Their daughter, Kathy, now Mrs. Larry Clement of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was born on September 4, 1948. Kathy attended college at Northern Iowa after graduating from Manning High School.

Their son, Steven, was born on November 8, 1952. Steven died of cancer on January 7, 1976. Steven attended college at DMACC in Ankeny after graduating from Manning High School. The Olsens built their house at 1113 S. Elm, and have lived there since 1961.

When Manning Creamery was sold, LaVerne took a job with the Agriculture Department of the State of Iowa as a dairy inspector for 14 years before retiring.

Audrey worked at Hansen & Bunz Law Office for 221/z years before retiring,

LaVerne has a hobby of raising fruit trees at his home, which keeps him busy during his retirement.

LaVerne was in the navy in World War II, a 25 year membership in the fire department, 10 years on the Municipal Gas Board, and one of the organizers of Municipal TV.

Audrey is a member of Manning Garden Club, RSVP, and Altar Society in Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa.

LOIS AND DAN PETERS

Dan was the oldest of three children born to George and Milda Peters. He attended school in Aspinwall and Manning, graduating in 1949. He went to telegraphy school in Chillecothe, Missouri, and was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for three years. He entered the military service in 1952, serving in the 7th Infantry in Korea. Upon discharge, he earned a forestry degree from ISC in Ames in 1958.

Dan married Lois Wilhelm in 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Lois was born in the Manning General Hospital, attending schools in Westside and Manning and graduating in 1949. She graduated from Iowa Lutheran Nursing School in Des Moines in 1952.

They have five children: Mike and Callie Peters of Bozeman, Montana, and their children, Daniel and Darcy; Mark and Lynne Peters; Julie and Jim Rabbitt and their children, Michael and Timothy; and Greg Peters, all of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Jeff and Mary Peters, of Oak Creek, Colorado.

Dan has retired from the U.S. Forest Service, having been stationed in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Dillon, Pagosa Springs, Steamboat Springs, and Monte Vista, Colorado.

Lois has worked as an R.N. in the various places they have lived and retired in 1991, after ten years, from her position as Assistant Director of Nurses at the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake Colorado.

They returned to make Manning their home in May of 1991, and now reside in the former home of George Peters on Third Street.

They observed their 40th wedding anniversary at a surprise party hosted by their children and grandchildren in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in June of 1992.

RENEE AND DALE PFANNKUCH


Rachel and Ryan Pfannkuch.

Renee and Dale Pfannkuch ended the Manning Centennial year with the birth of their daughter, Rachel Renee, on December 15, 1981. The family also includes their son, Ryan Dale, born on June 22, 1978.

Dale was born on December 9, 1950, in Manning and is the son of Marvin and Viola Pfannkuch of Manning. He is a 1969 graduate of Manning Community School and also graduated from the Farm Operation and Management program at Iowa Western Community College in 1974. He served with the army and is a Vietnam veteran.

Renee was born on August 15, 1951, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Emmett and Veronica Brazeal. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs with the class of 1969 and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1974. She is the Librarian for the City of Manning and serves as a substitute teacher for area schools.

The couple was married on May 31, 1975, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ryan and Rachel both attend Manning Community School and are active in music and sports.

The Pfannkuchs are members of the First Presbyterian Church of Manning.


JOAN AND GILBERT PHILLIPS

Gilbert (Gib) Thomas Phillips was born on June 10, 1930, in Ida Grove, Iowa. Joan Martin Phillips was born on June 3, 1935, in Oakland, Iowa. Her family moved to the Albert City area in 1943. Gib and Joan were married on October 3, 1953, and had four children: Gail, 1954; Diane, 1955; Michael, 1957; and Steven, 1959.

In the fall of 1954, they moved to Manning and Gib took over the local State Farm Insurance agency replacing John Steinhauer, who was retiring. Both Gib and Joan were and are very active in community affairs. Gib served on the city council for 12 years; is a member of the Manning Development Corporation, serves on the

Joan and Gilbert Phillips.

Manning General Hospital and Plaza board, is a member of the Manning Municipal Light Board, is president of the Western Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association, has a position on the board of the Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative, is a member of the board of directors for Manning Trust and Savings Bank, and is on the board of West Central Iowa Healthcare Foundation.

Joan volunteers to assist the Manning Development Corporation, represents Manning on the Carroll Area Development Council, and has a position on the Iowa Department of Economic Development Board. She and daughter Gail, owned and operated a women's clothing store, The Frauline Haus from 1982-1987.

Gail Ann Phillips married Joe Kotval, son of Dr. and Mrs. Russell Kotval, Pipestone, Minnesota, on August 26, 1978. They have two daughters: Molly, 1983, and Amy, 1985. The Kotvals make their home in Manning, and Joe works for Manning Insurance Agency and Gail for Manning General Hospital, and the West Central Iowa Healthcare Foundation.

Diane Phillips married Brad Jones, son of Virgil and Doris Jones, Storm Lake, Iowa on July 1, 1978. They have two children: Benjamin, 1983, and Jennifer, 1987, and make their home in Storm Lake where Diane is a teacher and Brad has a nursery business.

Michael Phillips married Sandy Leonard, daughter of Eugene and Irene Leonard, Humboldt, Iowa, on June 25, 1983. They have three children: Amanda, 1987; Michelle, 1988; and Michael Jay, 1991. Their home is Des Moines, Iowa and Michael is a State Farm agent.

Steven Phillips married Julie Blake, daughter of John and Mary Blake, Waukon, Iowa, on October 21, 1984. They live in Omaha, Nebraska, and Steven is a State Farm Insurance agent, and Julie is a financial analyst for Union Pacific Railroad.

MARIE AND AUGUST PLAHN

August Plahn was born on August 20, 1876, in Elmshorm, Schleswig Holstein, Germany. In 1893, he came to the United States and settled in Manning.

On June 12, 1901, he was married to Marie Ehlers at Carroll, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Plahn farmed near Manning until 1969 and at his retirement, moved to Manning. Mr. Plahn passed away on January 31 at the Manning hospital following a heart attack. Mrs. Plahn passed away November 20, 1961.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one brother. Mr. Plahn was a member of the Lutheran Church in Manning. Mr. and Mrs. Plahn have three daughters: Mamie (Mrs. Gilbert Sievertsen) of Manning; Olga (Mrs. Marvin Schultz) of Manning; Edna (Mrs. LeRoy Schumann) of Manning. They also were survived by one grandson, Garnet Sievertsen of Manilla.

 

HELEN AND RAYMOND PRATT

Raymond Pratt came to Manning in 1940 from Correctionville as co-owner with his father, O.E. Pratt, of Coast to Coast Store. Raymond and Helen Frances (McGrath) were married in March of 1944. Raymond was a Naval officer at this time.

Four children were born to this union:

Carolyn Marie - married Earl Blohm, have four daughters and farm near Audubon.

Dan Orin, Married Angela Kusel and have a son and a daughter; Dan is a landscape engineer in Wichita, Kansas.

Kelly Brian was a salesman for dairy cultures in Europe. He died at age 41. His wife, Petra, and three children live in Germany.

John Kennedy married Christine Wirt. They have a boy and girl and live in Kenaska, Wisconsin. He is a chemist for Abbott Laboratories in Chicago, Illinois.

Raymond and Helen were very active in civic affairs, veterans organizations, Presbyterian Church and political affairs. They were also members of Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge.
