LILLIAN AND WILLIAM J. F. JENSEN

William John Frederich Jensen was born near Manning December 23, 1901. His father, William Jurgen Jensen, was from the LeClaire, Iowa, area, and had ridden with Buffalo Bill as a cowboy before coming to Crawford County. The elder Jensen married Lillian Brus from Aspinwall, and they had eight children. The family lived on farms in Crawford and Carroll County, Iowa, and Bloomfield, Nebraska, and located in Aspinwall from 1917 to 1924, to run the dance and pool hall. Young Bill enjoyed operating the movie machine there.

Bill attended the rural schools near his home. He was a mechanic and electrician, and worked as a maintenance employee at the Manning Creamery Company for many years until his retirement in the mid-1960s. He and his wife, Minnie, continued to live in Manning.

Wilhelmina, better known as Minnie, was the daughter of Henry and Caroline Hageman Westphalen, who farmed north of Manning from 1878 until their retirement to Manning in 1918. Minnie, the youngest of six children, was born October 16, 1899. Minnie was married to Rudolph Taylor August 3, 1919, and they spent several years in Nebraska. One daughter, Iola Mae, was born to this union on May 16, 1920. May 6, 1934, Minnie was married to William J.F. Jensen, and they had a son, William Rae, born December 26, 1935.

Iola was married to Clarence Stammer, who farmed north of Aspinwall, and they had two sons, Clifford and Calvin. William Rae was married to Barbara Blair of Harlan, and they had three children: Shelli, Elizabeth, and William Todd. Barbara and the children live in California.

William Rae died July 4, 1982; William J.F. died March 31, 1983; Iola Mae (Stammer) died December 17, 1983; and Minnie died March 25, 1986.

DELORES AND DONALD JOENS

Donald, son of George and Frieda Joens, was born in Crawford County, and later moved to Manning in 1930. He attended school in Manning until he was drafted into the armed services when he was in the eleventh grade.

DeLores, daughter of Henry and Bertha Nickum, was born in Manning, attended the schools here, and graduated from Manning High School with the class of 1945.

Later, after their marriage, in 1946, DeLores worked in the Anderson Clinic for eleven years and also served as Justice of the Peace for the town of Manning for seven years.

the United States Navy for three and a half years. He has been a member of the V.F.W. since 1944, and belonged to the Manning Fire Department for thirty years. He began working for Larry Polking at Manning Oil in 1974. Some years later he purchased the station and incorporated with Daryl Rowedder and Robert Hagedorn. Donald retired in 1987.

The Joenses have three children: Charlotte, Mrs. James Sol[ of Audubon, Iowa. They have two children, Ron and Barbie; Mark and his wife, Mary Jo Knippling of Gann Valley, South Dakota, have three children, Jennifer, Angela, and Matthew. Kerry married Jane Hacker of Templeton, Iowa. They also have three children: Wendy, Penny, and Nicholas.

Senior Master Sgt. Kerry Joens is serving with the United States Air Force, and, with his family, is making his home in Dover, Delaware.

Donald and DeLores have ,,one great-granddaughter, Jessica Sue Soil, daughter of Ron and Sue Soll of Audubon, Iowa.

JUDY AND LYLE JOENS

Brad Joens was married to Perri D'Lane Sullinger of Clovis, New Mexico on July 6, 1991. They are now living in Eugene, Oregon. Brian Joens moved to Los Angeles, California in 1983.

VIRGINIA AND BOBBIE JOHNSON

Bobbie Dale Johnson, son of Gerald "Jerry" Johnson and Esther Olsen Johnson, was born August 21, 1931, in Harlan, Iowa. He moved to Manning with his parents in 1940, where he attended the Manning schools and graduated in 1949.

After graduating from high school, he attended the Sioux City College of Barbering, after which he barbered in Leeds, Iowa. From 1952 to 1954, Bobbie served in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the Manning area where he worked on the railroad for a short time, and then started barbering with Joe Stein. Bobbie purchased the barber shop when Joe Stein retired. He also worked for Rasmussen's Lumber Company in between his barbering. Bobbie eventually sold the shop and retired from barbering. He then started working for the U.S. Post Office from which he retired in 1985. He then worked at Thrifty Food.

On June 7, 1958, Bobbie was united in marriage with Virginia Dammann, daughter of Raymond Dammann and Mabel Brus. Virginia attended country school as a child and then attended the Manning school, graduating in 1956. Bobbie and Virginia resided on a farm one and a fourth miles south of Manning on the airport road. They sold the farm and moved into the town of Manning in 1987. Bobbie passed away at home on March 24, 1992.

Bobbie and Virginia have two children: Teresa, who was born November 13, 1962, and Sonia, who was born January 18, 1967. Teresa graduated from Manning High School in 1981 and attended DMACC in Boone, Iowa, where she graduated with a R.N. degree in 1983. She was united in marriage to Douglas Schroeder on August 20, 1983. Teresa is employed at the Manning General Hospital, and her husband is employed by Crawford County Conservation as a park technician at Yellow Smoke Park in Denison. They reside in Denison.

Sonia graduated from Manning High School in 1985 and attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated in 1987. Sonia was united in marriage on June 15, 1991, to Lynn Nulle. She is a legal secretary and is employed by Joseph E. Halbur, attorney, in Carroll, Iowa. Her husband is a farmer and they reside on a farm 10 miles southwest of Manning.

EDNA AND KERMIT KASPERSEN

Kermit and Edna Kaspersen celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary June 2, 1992.

Kermit was born July 27, 1909, at Westside, Iowa. His parents were Alfred and Agness Kaspersen. Edna was born January 13, 1911, at Manning, Iowa. Her parents were Jurgen and Anna Hinz. They had two children: Beverly (19321934 and Billie (1934-1943).

They started farming in Westside when they were married and that didn't work out, so Kermit started trucking and then drove a Chicago Northwestern truck. He hauled freight and U.S. mail. They had a route from Sioux City, Iowa to Clinton, Iowa five days a week, and at that time they lived in Boone. Edna worked at F.W. Woolworth and J.C. Penney. After 19 years they took the trucks off the road and Kermit drove a bus at the college at Ames for fourteen years and Edna worked at Bourns at Ames. They made electronic parts there.

When they retired and they moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas and lived there for ten years. Then they moved back to Iowa to 119 - 3rd Street, Manning.

SHARON AND KEITH KELDERMAN

Brian graduated from Manning High School in 1983. Our home was completely destroyed by an explosion and fire in February, 1986. Everything was lost. Our family, friends, church, and the entire community of Manning, was very supportive and kind. This happened six months after Keith's heart attack, and we were feeling like real survivors (with God's help, of course), and very blessed. We moved into our new home in September, 1986, on the same property. In 1987 Eric graduated from Manning High School, and Brian graduated from Iowa State University in the College of Business. Brian is employed with Allied Insurance in Des Moines, Iowa, as an underwriter. Eric graduated from Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Missouri, in December, 1991, with a BS in social science. He is employed in the Woolworth Corp. in Chicago, Illinois, in their -manager training program.

GENELLE AND LELAND KIENAST

Leland Kienast and Genelle Kruse were married March 29, 1953. They farm southwest of Manning. They have two sons: Tim, born in 1958, and Bary, born in 1961. Tim graduated from Manning High School in 1976 and from Iowa State University with a B.S. Degree in ag business in 1980. Bary graduated from Manning High School in 1979 and from Iowa State University with a B.S. Degree in ag education in 1983.

Tim married Joni Siepker in 1979. They have three children: Jill born in 1982, Jessica born in 1987, and Jason born in 1990. Tim farms south of Manning. Joni graduated from Manning High School in 1977 and attended American Institute of Business and received a secretarial/receptionist degree in 1978. She is employed by the Bunz Law Firm.

Bary married Karen Vollstedt in 1983. They have two daughters: Stacie born in 1985, and Brooke born in 1988. Bary farms southwest of Manning. Karen graduated from Manning High School in 1980, attended American Institute of Business, and received an accounting degree in 1982. She is employed by the First National Bank.

CAROLINE AND FRED KIENAPFEL

Fred Otto Kienapfel, only child of Fred W. and Justina Kienapfel, was born June 2, 1881, and came from Hagnau, Ost Prussen, Germany, to Atlantic, Iowa, in June of 1882. In 1892 he and his parents moved to a farm in Audubon County. On January 11, 1911, he married Caroline Ploen, daughter of Joachim and Dorothea Wiese Ploen. They farmed several years in Audubon County and then moved to a farm four and a half miles southeast of Manning. They moved to Manning in 1919.

They were the parents of four children: a son, William, died in infancy, a daughter, Dorothy, passed away December 25, 1984. She was the wife of Thomas Sharp, and they farmed seven and a half miles west of Manning. Tom is retired and lives in Denison; William married Connie Benton and they live in Polk City. William is a salesman for PDI at Ankeny, Iowa, a branch of Hy-Vee Foods. They have one son, Chris. Carole married Ronald Evilsizer, a state fire marshal, and they live in Denison. They have two daughters, Mrs. Jay (Rhonda) Stidham of Waterloo, and Mrs. Chad (Julie) Saemisch of Urbandale, Iowa. Donald Sharp married Gloria Jahn. Donald was killed in a tragic airplane crash on June 20, 1980. They lived in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, at the time of his death.

A son, Harold (Hip) Kienapfel, married Eileen Peters, and they live in Carroll, Iowa. Hip is a retired executive director of New Hope Village in Carroll and a retired Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He is at the present the Mayor of Carroll, Iowa. Hip and Eileen have two children. Dr. Bruce Kienapfel is Director of School Management Specialists, Inc., of Ulysses, Kansas. He and wife, Nancy, have two daughters. Hip and Eileen's daughter, Lana Vander Linden, is attending the University of North Carolina and will be receiving her Doctor's degree.

The youngest child of Fred and Caroline Kienapfel is Margie Kienapfel, who is retired after 31 years of service as an operator, cashier , and service representative for the Manning Telephone Company and United Telephone Company of Iowa. She is now a receptionist and communications dispatcher at the Manning General Hospital.

ANNA AND HANS KLINDT

Hans and Anna Klindt lived on a farm just south of Manning where the Claus Bunz home is presently located.

The couple had four children: Harry, who married Etta Whitcher; Emma, who married George Becker; Anna married Adolf Paulsen; Elsie married Albert Stoelk.

Harry had four children: Hazel, Edna, Harry Jr., and Harold.

Emma also had four children: Ruth, Alva, Clinton, and George Jr.

Anna had two children: Bernice and Vinton.

Elsie had six children: Merle, Darlene, Leon, Janice, Berdine, and Donald.

Claus Nielsen, husband of Bernice Paulsen Nielsen, passed away March 15, 1992.

DELORES AND ARTHUR E. KUHN

Arthur Kuhn was born on December 2, 1925, son of Ernest and Wilhelmine Kuhn, in Shelby County, Iowa, on a the farm where he and his wife, Delores, now reside. Arthur attended the rural school near his home, and later attended Manning High School.

On August 18, 1946, he was united in marriage with Delores Rix. She is the daughter of Alfred and Elsie Rix. She also attended the rural school near her home, and later attended the Manning High School, graduating with the class of 1946.

Arthur and Delores are the parents of three children, all of whom graduated from the Manning High School. They are Kay Marie who is married to Dale Guenther. Kay is a systems analyst for U.S. West Marketing Resources Group, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska. David is married to Linda Rowedder. David is the County Executive Director, A.S.C.S in Crawford County, Iowa. Kristyn Sue manages the Midwest Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Clinic in Omaha, Nebraska, where her husband, John Dobler, is a physical therapist. Arthur and Delores have six grandchildren: Misti and Sheri Guenther, Jeramy and Jessi Kuhn, and Melanie and Shannon Dobler.

The Kuhns are active members of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

ARDITH AND WALTER LAGE

Walter is the youngest son of Herman and Laura (Mohr) Lage. Herman died in November 1983, and Laura died in October, 1968. Walter is married to Ardith David. She is the daughter of Clarence and Beata (Schade) David. Her mother died in March 1989. Her father is living in the Friendship Home in Audubon. They are the parents of two sons. Lance is married to J0 Ellen Carlson and they live in -Atlantic. Both are teachers in Cumberland-Massena School. Lance is also coaching boys' sports. They have one daughter, Faye Ellen, born in May 1984.

Brian was married to Kathy Conroy on July 8, 1989. She is a teacher and girls' volleyball coach in the Manning School. They live in Manning. Brian is superintendent of the Manning-Manilla Golf and Country Club.

Walter and Ardith live on the home place, where he was born, northwest of Manning. He was a substitute and regular mail carrier since 1972. He retired in January 1992 from the United States Postal Service. He now enjoys the freedom, church, yard work, sports, and some traveling.
