EILEEN AND LEANDER HALBUR

Leander Halbur, son of Ben and Margaret (Steffes) Halbur, was born on a farm near Halbur, Iowa, on December 11, 1930.

On January 8, 1955, he married Eileen Riesberg, who was born in Carroll, Iowa, September 13, 1934, the daughter of John and Carmelita (Schultes) Riesberg of near Halbur.

The couple lived south of Halbur until 1967, when they moved to a farm south of Manning. They farmed there until 1988, when they moved to Manning.

They are the parents of six children: Sue, married Rick Grage and they live in Sioux City, Iowa, and have three children: Angie, Nickie, and John.

Ken married Pat Ferneding and they live in Geneva, Nebraska. Their children are Josh and Katie.

Terry married JoAnne Croghan and their residence is Laguna Beach, California. They have three children: Jessica, Amy, and Eric.

Kristy married Kent Hugeback. They farm west of Manning and have five children: Tim, Matt, Nate, Jason, and Jodi.

Scott married Darlys Klocke, and they reside south of Manning on the home farm. They have four children: Melissa, Michelle, Amanda, and Rebecca.

Carla married Cory Hacker, arid they live in Manning. They have two children: Robyn and Brittany.

SANDRA AND KEITH HASS

Keith Hass, son of Marvin and Florence (Steckelberg) Hass, and Sandra Dammann, a daughter of Lester and Ruby (Cavanaugh) Dammann, were united on September 5, 1959, at the First Methodist Church in Manning, Iowa.

Keith and Sandra were both 1959 graduates of Manning High School and were both employees of Manning Creamery Company at the time of their marriage. Following the birth of their first child, Sandra remained in the home for several years and worked as a homemaker. Keith remained employed at the creamery. Later both became licensed insurance agents. Keith was a career underwriter for Farm Bureau Insurance, and Sandra worked as secretary at the Manning Insurance Agency. Eventually both found careers elsewhere. Keith is in his 16th year as territory manager for Golden Sun Feeds, and Sandra is office manager at the Manning campus at Quakerdale.

Keith and Sandra now live at 1285 Washington Court in Manning. Following their marriage they lived in several apartments and homes in Manning and lived briefly in Carroll, Iowa. In 1965, they purchased a grand old home at 609 Second Street in Manning from D.A. Tisdale. This was the Hass family home for 26 years. In 1991 they sold that home to Bryan and Cindy Herrin and purchased the home at Washington Court.

They are parents of three daughters. All three daughters are also graduates of Manning Community School and all continued their education following high school graduation.

Teresa Lynn attended Iowa Western Community College where she received a certificate in child development. She married Kevin Frank Kasperbauer, a son of Norbert and Mary Ann Kasperbauer, of Manilla, Iowa, on November 27, 1982. Their first child, a son, Joshua James, died at birth on August 15, 1984. They are parents to Krystle Marie, Karl Jo, and Tyler Jacob. Kevin is a farmer, farming with his parents, as well as owning a farm south of Vail where the family lives. Teresa is a working partner in the farming operation.

Lisa Sue also attended Iowa Western Community College where she obtained a Licensed Practical Nursing degree. She married Trenton Lars Hodne, a son of Don and Connie Hodne, of Manilla, Iowa, on November 24, 1984. They are parents of Larissa Louise, Trenton Lars, Jr. (T.J.), and twin sons, Daniel Keith and Derek Dean. Trent is a plumber/electrician with his uncle at Sahl Service in Denison and Lisa is a nurse at the Manilla Manor. They own and live on an acreage north of Manilla.

Anissa June attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, earning her degree as a registered nurse. Following a year at Denver General Hospital in Denver, Colorado, she returned to Iowa and on January 20, 1990, married Bruce Gerald Irlmeier, a son of Frank and Mary Ann Irlmeier, of Templeton, Iowa. They are parents of Miranda Marie and Baby Irlmeier, due in October

of 1992. Bruce is a farmer. Their farm is the Irlmeier family farm north of Templeton, Iowa, where Bruce, Anissa, and children live. Anissa works as a public health nurse for Carroll County.

A fourth "daughter" is Kumi Suzuki, AFS daughter/sister of the Hass family. Kumi became a part of the family during 1983-84 when she lived with the Hasses and attended and graduated from Manning Community High School. She returned to Japan in 1984, attended college and has worked in Tokyo, England, and Australia. She has returned for visits on three occasions. Kumi will be married in February, 1993. After her marriage, she and her husband will reside and work in New York City.

Keith and Sandra are members of the United Methodist Church. Sandra is a lifelong member of that church and Keith joined the Methodist Church in 1959.

CLARUS HEITHOFF

Clarus passed away in July, 1984. In 1983, Helene retired as a U.S.D.A. employee and still lives on their "Century" farm. She is involved in volunteer work now.

Diane's husband, Dennis Riesberg, died very suddenly of a heart attack in November, 1981. They have three children. Their oldest son, Brian, an electrical engineer, works for G.E. in Burlington, Iowa. Douglas has a degree in transportation logistics and is employed in Chicago. Cheri is a junior at I.S.U.

Bob and his wife, Linda, live in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. Bob, a ceramic engineer, is the Sr. Research Associate for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company in Pittsburgh. Linda is a college math instructor. They have three children: Andrea and Chris who are attending Virginia Tech, and Erin, a high school student.

Kathy and her husband, Mike Smith, live in Granger, Indiana. Mike is Director of Facilities Engineer for Notre Dame University. Kathy is a substitute teacher. They have three sons: Joseph, Benjamin, and Gabriel, all in grade school.

Barbara and her husband, David Wittrock, live in Seattle, Washington. David is an attorney and a tax partner with Peat Marwick. Barbara is on the staff at Assumption Parochial School. They have two sons, Phillip and Andrew.

Jodi and her husband, Bob Riesselman, live in Excelsior, Minnesota. Bob is a professional engineer employed by A.D.C. Telecommunications in Minneapolis. Jodie is employed by Dayton Department Store. They have two children: Graham and Kenzie.

SALLY AND RAYMOND HEITHOFF

Raymond Heithoff, son of Bernard and Rose Heithoff, was born at Templeton, Iowa, on August 21, 1915. He attended the Templeton school He farmed with his father and brothers until 1940 when he was married to Sally Sporrer at Dedham, Iowa, on January 23, 1940.

Sally was born at Dedham, Iowa, to Joe and Rose Sporrer. After their marriage the young couple moved to a farm southeast of Manning. To this union two children were born. Jane was born on December 4, 1949. She attended schools in Gray and Manning. She was married to Boyd Snow of Rawlins, Wyoming, on September 5, 1970. They are the parents of two sons: Chris and Jeremy. Boyd is employed on the Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer.

Dean was born on October 31, 1959, and attended the Manning school. He was a graduate of Iowa State University in 1978 with a degree in nuclear engineering and works for the General Electric Company in upstate New York. He was married to Lori Dorris on May 22, 1982. Lori was also a graduate of the State University of Iowa. She is employed by the state of New York in Albany and has a degree in urban and regional planning. They have three children: Paul, Brooke, and Nathan.

Raymond passed away after a tractor accident on July 21, 1962. Sally and children moved to Manning, where she still resides.

RUTH AND RON HIATT

Ruth Brady and Ron Hiatt were married October 4, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church at Manning.

Ruth was born and raised in Aspinwall, the daughter of Ed and Rose Brady, who lived the first 21 yeas of her life over the depot where her father was agent. She attended school at Aspinwall through the 8th grade and then attended Manning High School, graduating in 1946.

Ron was born in Manning, the son of Roy and Edna Hiatt, and lived on several farms and in Irwin before returning to Manning in 1944. He was drafted into the service that year, and served in the Philippine Islands and Japan until 1946.

Ruth and Ron have two children: Paul, Coon Rapids, and Jodi Foutch, Manning. They have two grandchildren, Nikki Foutch, 20, and Eric Foutch, 15.

Ron is co-owner of Thrifty Food Market in Manning. He was crowned king of the silver years royalty at Manning's Centennial in 1981.

1910 - Paul Moerke made 70,000 cigars in his Manning factory, the greatest number being the "Iowa Girl".

FREDDA AND HARRY HINZ

Harry Hinz, son of Herman and Emma Hinz, was born in Manning and educated in the local schools. In 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the 55th Engineers, spending a year and a half overseas. Upon returning to Manning, he joined the staff of the First National Bank of Manning, and continued in that capacity for fifty years, retiring in 1965. He met his wife, Fredda Haase, while she was teaching school in Manning, and they were married in 1927.

Harry served as treasurer of the town for many years until he gave up that job to serve for many years on the City Council. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Presbyterian Church, and was one of the founders of the American Legion. He also helped promote and establish the Manning-Manilla Golf Course. He was known as a great "Old Timer" golf enthusiast. While in the bank he formed a finance and insurance business, writing for the St. Paul Fire and Insurance Co., which he continued for several years after his retirement.

His wife, Fredda, was interested in community service and was one of the founders of the Manning Public Library, becoming librarian in 1945, and after forty-three years, retired from this important job. At the time of Fredda's retirement in 1983, the library board honored her with a public reception, attended by many of Manning's appreciated residents. A former Manning resident as a child, Mrs. Virginia Lee Mickunas of Des Moines, who is considered as a noted artist, was commissioned to paint a portrait of Fredda, which now hangs in the library. When Fredda began her work at the library, there were 1500 volumes on the shelves and upon her retirement, there were about 14,000. She is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Federated Women's Club, P.E.O., and the Presbyterian Church. She also served on the school board for six and a half years during the time of the stormy reorganization.

In 1945 the Hinzes purchased the old Fred Kienapfel farm located in South Manning within the city corporation. The land was surveyed, laid out in lots and sold for homes. The driveway became known as 9th Street. The schoolhouse and the new part of the cemetery are located on some of that land.

Harry and Fredda had one son, Roger, born in 1938. After two years in college, he returned and became an electrician working for Detlefsen Electric.

Harry died in 1982 and Mrs. Hinz and son live in their home located on 9th Street.

IVA AND ORVILLE HINZE

The Orville Hinze family was listed in the original book with the Hinze Century Farm. Orville and Iva, who are retired and enjoy traveling, live on the farmstead, but lease the crop land to others.

The Hinze family includes Kathy and Dan Keller, David (attending Simpson College), Suzanne, and Kenneth, of Clive, a Des Moines suburb; Dr. Ronald and Patti Hinze, Melissa, Chad, and Nathan, of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin; and Joni and Arthur Jacobson, Deborah and Kathryn, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, a Minneapolis suburb.

Kathy and Joni are registered nurses, and Dr. Ron has the Cedar Grove Veterinary Clinic.

JULIE AND SCOTT HODNE

Scott Hodne, son of Sally and Ron Hodne, graduated from the Manning High School in 1981. On August 11, 1984, he was married to Julie Collison at the St. Augustine Church in Halbur, Iowa.

In December of 1985 Scott started working as a salesman for a feed company, Agri-King, where he won several awards, such as "Rookie of the Year" in 1987, and four presidential awards from 1987-1991.

Their first child, Katie Lynn, was born October 1, 1986.

Julie worked at the Manilla Manor nursing home from 1984 to 1987 and then began working at the Manning Family Recovery Center in March of 1988. They moved to Manning in July, 1989.

Kellie Beth was born October 6, 1989. Scott is presently working for Triple F Nutrition of Westside since he left Agri-King. He is now a district sales manager.

Julie has mainly spent time at home with the girls but continues to work part time at the Manning General Hospital. She also graduated from the Manning High School and then graduated from the Des Moines Area Community College nursing school in May, 1984.

THELMA AND ARLO HODNE

Thelma and Arlo Hodne celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on April 6, 1985, with an open house and dance at the Irwin Community Hall. Arlo retired from farming in 1985 and then worked part time for Soll's Service in Aspinwall.

The couple enjoyed yearly winter trips to Las Vegas and summer fishing trips to Lake Nungusser in Canada. Arlo suffered a massive stroke in February of 1988 and was confined to a wheel chair after that time.

They celebrated their fifty-fifth anniversary at a small celebration at the Rose Petal in Irwin in 1990. Arlo passed away due to a heart attack on September 22, 1990. Thelma resides at their home at 1211 Twelfth Street in Manning.

SALLY AND RON HODNE

Sally and Ron Hodne moved from the farm to Manning in 1985, and purchased their present home at 1112 Center Street in 1987.

After managing the NFO Collection Point at Westside, Iowa, for two years, Ron joined Farmland Industries working in the livestock services division. He was instrumental in writing the Pigfinder Program, a computer livestock auction that is held every week. He now markets this program to co-ops and farmers in the five-state area. Ron joined the Catholic church on December 24, 1988, and is a member of the Manning Sacred Heart Parish.

Sally resumed her college education in 1982, attending classes at Northwest Missouri State University. She received her degree in elementary education in 1984. She has taught at Holy Trinity School in Templeton, Iowa, since 1985.

Their oldest son, Bret, received his associates degree from Iowa Western Community College in 1986. He married Barbara Myer, daughter of Dr. Philip and Janet Myer of Manning, on August 16, 1986. Bret is employed by the city of West Des Moines and is a senior at Upper Iowa University, Des Moines campus.

Barbara graduated from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences on May 24, 1991, and is a resident physician in family practice at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

They have a son, Nicholas, born on June 25, 1989, and a son, Ryan John, born on September 24, 1992.

Scott married Julie Collison, daughter of Tom and Sharon Collison of Arcadia, Iowa, on August 11, 1984. They live in Manning and have two daughters, Katie, age six, and Kellie, age three.

Nate graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in finance in 1989. He then enrolled at Drake University Law School and graduated on May 9, 1992. He was sworn into the Iowa Bar Association on June 12, 1992.

Catherine Irlmeier

Catherine (Williams) Irlmeier was born November 1, 1920, the daughter of Anton and Ida

Zubrod Williams. She married Albert Irlmeier on January 30, 1946. Albert passed away on July 10, 1969.

Catherine has six children. They are: Sharon, Mrs. James Daniel, who has three children; Amy, Lisa, and Jeff; Vernon is married to Carol Peter, and they have two children; Catherine and Steven; Shirley, Mrs. Jim Heithoff, who has seven children: Randy, Scott, Craig, Jenny, Todd, Beth and Neil; Marlene lives at 330 First Street in Manning; Ronald is married to Donna Ricklefs and they have six children: Jason, Allen, Kenneth, Marie, Julie, and Laura; Joleen is married to Darrell Brincks and they have one child, Stephanie.

Catherine is a member of Sacred Heart Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court, 1492.

DONNA JEAN AND RONALD IRLMEIER

Ronald Irlmeier, born August 10, 1954, is the son of Catherine Williams Irlmeier and the late Albert Irlmeier. His wife is Donna Jean Ricklefs, born April 16, 1954, the daughter of Vernon Ricklefs and Darlene Seefeld Ricklefs, of Titonka, Iowa. Ronald and Donna were married on August 28, 1976, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Fort Dodge. Ronald is a graduate of Manning Community High School and Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Donna is a graduate of Titonka High School and attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Ron is employed by Ag Processing, Inc. in Manning. Donna is employed by the Manning Plaza.

They live on the family farm three and one-half miles north of Manning. Ronald and Donna are the parents of six children: Jason Vernon, age 15; Allen Ronald, age 12; Kenneth John, age 10; Marie Catherine, age 8; Julie Darlene, age 6; and Laura Ann, age 2. They are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning.

Marlene Irlmeier, daughter of Catherine and the late Albert Irlmeier, was born on November 22, 1951. She is a member of Sacred Heart Church and Catholic Daughters of the America Court 1492.

CAROL AND VERNON IRLMEIER

Vernon, the son of Catherine and the late Albert Irlmeier, was born November 24, 1948. He grew up on a farm near Manning.

Carol is the daughter of Anna Peter and the late Frank X Peter. She grew up on a farm near Dedham. She attended grade school there and graduated from Kuemper High School.

On September 18, 1976, Vernon and Carol were married at St. Joseph's Church in Dedham. They moved to a farm near Manning. Vernon farms and Carol is employed at General Electric in Carroll.

Carol is a member of the Altar Society andCatholic Daughters of America Court 1492 at Manning.

They have two children: Catherine, age 9, born November 16, 1982, who attends Manning Community School, and Steven, age 18 months, born March 10, 1991.
