CYNTHIA AND LARRY GENZEN

Larry Virgil Genzen, son of Virgil and Florence Hinz Genzen, was born on November 11, 1937, in the farm home, rural Manning, where he presently lives. He attended a rural school northeast of Manning until 1951, graduated from Manning High School in 1956, and received his B.S. in ag education from Iowa State University in 1961.

Cynthia Ann Peters, daughter of George and Milda Wegner Peters, was born on October 22, 1938, in Manning General Hospital. She attended the Manning schools the entire 13 years and graduated in 1956. She received her R.N. degree from Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines in 1959.

Larry and Cynthia were baptized, confirmed, and married, August 30, 1959, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Larry taught school in Hubbard for three and a half years before moving back to Manning, where they have been engaged in farming two miles northeast of Manning for the past 27 years. Larry has continued to teach in area high schools and presently is in his fourth year of teaching at the IKM school system. Cynthia has worked in hospitals in Ames and Eldora, and has worked at the Manning General Hospital for the past 27 years.

They have five children who all graduated from Manning High School.

Janet Lee (July 6, 1960) received her R.N. degree from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, where she presently works. She married Gary Lee Smith on November 27, 1984. They are engaged in farming near Linden. They have three daughters: Jennifer Lee (October 26, 1985), Stefanie Ann (May 31, 1987), and Samantha Marie (July 1, 1990).

Paula Jean (August 16, 1961) works at United Parcel Service. She married Robert Lorenze Wulf on May 2, 1987, who is employed at Farmland Industries. They live on an acreage north of Deloit. Their children are Sara Jean Grage (January 18, 1991), Jeremy David Wulf (February 27, 1989), and Ashley Renee Wulf (June 16, 1990).

Robert Allen (July 19, 1963) is a mechanic at Puck Implement in Manning. He has a daughter, Rebecca Sue (July 19, 1983) and is engaged to Irene Alexander of Audubon and formerly from England. She has two sons, Matthew (August 6, 1985) and Michael (April 1987).

Barbara Lynn (March 20, 1967) received her associate in science degree (business administration) from DMACC in August 1992. She married Marc Louis Hinners on September 20, 1985. Marc is a salesman for the Farmers Elevator Coop in Arcadia. They live on an acreage by Roselle and are engaged in pork production. They have three children: Bart James (February 27, 1986), Lacey Marie (March 30, 1988), and Paige Lauren (March 6, 1990).

Judith Ann (June 10, 1969) is a student at Buena Vista College and will receive her degree in secondary education in 1993. She has been an assistant coach in the Wall Lake and Glidden schools. She married Michael Phillip Jacobsen on January 6, 1990, and he works at Breda Feed and Grain. They live in Wall Lake. They have a daughter, Taya Nichole (May 23, 1990).

AGNES AND MORRIS GODIKSEN

Morris Godiksen, born in Brovst, Denmark, in 1899, arrived in Brayton, Iowa, in 1917 to join his brother, Andrew, who had earlier immigrated to the United States. Morris worked in Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska, during which time he married Agnes Magnussen, who was also from Brovst. Later they moved to Chicago where Morris was engaged in the painting and decorating business.

In 1931 they moved to the farm southwest of Manning where Morris lived until he died in 1987.

Agnes died in 1937. The farm is now jointly owned by their three children: Evelyn Apicelli, Chicago, Illinois; Marian Schuyler, Oak Brook, Illinois; and Vernon Godiksen, Iowa City, Iowa, who all graduated from the Manning school system. Grandchildren are: Toni Apicelli, Chicago; Teri Apicelli, deceased; Susan Schuyler Leehey, LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Michael Schuyler, New York City; Cathy Godiksen Slott, Lindenhurst, Illinois; and Mark Godiksen, M.D., Fresno, California.

MARY AND HEINRICH GEORGE GRAVES

Heinrich George Graves (Greves) was a native of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, where he was born September 9, 1849. At the age of 18 he came to Clinton County, Iowa, with his brother, Peter. On March 23, 1875, he was married to Mary Everhart (Eberhardt) in Durant, Iowa.

Mary Everhart was born in Hampshire Township, Clinton County, on June 19, 1855, to Christopher and Anna Weber Everhart. Her father, who had immigrated from Dusselldorf, Germany, died in 1907 at the age of 100 years. Her oldest brother Frederich served in the Civil War under Sherman and was wounded at Vicksburg and again at Lookout Mountain. He moved to Manning in 1883 and lived there until 1911, when he settled on a farm near Hancock.

After their marriage, the Graveses lived in Durant and Westside before coming to Manning, where they lived for 25 years.

Nine children were born in the family. Lena, who married Herman Pribbernow, was born July 24, 1877, in Durant. She died June 22, 1961, in Omaha, Nebraska. Emma was born September 8, 1879, in Westside and died May 21, 1947, in Omaha. Henry Graves was born March, 1882, and died in Hemet, California. George G. Graves was born December 4, 1884, in Manning where he lived most of his life with his wife Jettchen and family. He died July 19, 1953, in Manning. William was born July 4, 1889, in Omaha and died December 1, 1922, in an automobile accident near Arcadia. Martha born September 18, 1893, also in Omaha, and was married to Lewis

Keppler. Twins, Edna and Edward, were born June 5, 1895, in Manning, where Edward died that same year. On the 9th of February 1916, Edna married Jack Peters in Omaha. She died August 27, 1945, in Manning.

Heinrich Graves died August 3, 1919, in Omaha and was buried in the Manning Cemetery. Mary died December 23, 1923, in Manning at the home of her daughter.

JETTCHEN AND GEORGE GORDON GRAVES

George Gordon Graves was born in Manning December 4, 1884, to Heinrich and Mary Everhart Graves. He spent his boyhood in a house which was the only one on the block and "just a stone's throw from the prairie". George started as a barber's apprentice when he was 15. When he was 65 years old, he also celebrated over 50 years as a barber.

On March 21, 1906, he married Jettchen Henrietta Habicht at Avoca, Iowa. They had met while Jettchen worked in a millinery shop in Manning. Jettchen's sister, Bertha, married Grover M. Brunnier also of Manning. Jettchen, the daughter of Friedrich and Bertha Klindt Habicht, was born January 6, 1886, near Hancock.

Friedrich Habicht was born June 1, 1856, in the small village of Gunzenau, Lauterbauch, Germany. He came to America in 1874 and some years later became the owner of Cedar Farm just outside Avoca.

In 1903 George was in partnership with Bill Brennan and remained in Manning until 1910. He then worked in Harlan and Denison until 1920. After WWI, when his brother Bill returned from service, they purchased a barber shop and pool hall in Arcadia, however, in 1923 George returned to Manning.

Their oldest son Reynold was born August 1910, in Harlan and now lives with his wife Laverna (Wuerdehoff) in Mohave Valley, Arizona. George E. Graves Jr. was born August 1914, in Denison and died December 1989, in Manning.

Arlene, born July 1918, also in Denison, resides in Ames, Iowa. Her husband Hugh Hostetter died in 1988. Anetha, Mrs. Joseph Trecker, born in 1923, in Arcadia now resides in Sun City West, Arizona.

George Graves Sr. died 19 July 1953, in Manning. Jettchen died April 29, 1965, in Harlan and is also buried in the family plot in the Manning Cemetery.

PAULINE AND GEORGE EDWARD GRAVES

George Edward Graves was born August 23, 1914, in Denison, Iowa, to George and Jettchen Habicht Graves. His family left Manning for several years but returned in 1923. George graduated from Manning High School in 1933. On June 15 of that same year he married Bernice Lois Hinz, daughter of Louis and Johanna Ruhde Hinz. Bernice was born December 29, 1913, near Manning and was also a 1933 graduate of Manning High.

Bernice died, due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident, on June 15, 1964. On December 9, 1965, George was united in marriage to Pauline Cramer in Manning where they continued to make their home.

George was employed by the Manning Creamery Co. from April 28, 1935, until 1971, where he was manager for many years. He then worked at M & I Dehy for 11 years until his retirement in 1982. He was active in community affairs having served as scout master, member of the Chamber of Commerce and a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church. However, one of his favorite pastimes was fishing at the various lakes nearby.

Two children were born to George and Bernice, a son Kenneth and a daughter Joan. Kenneth, born March 22, 1934, near Manning, married Beverly Marie Brus April 8, 1956, in Manilla. They have three sons: Denis and Dean, who are twins, and David. Denis married Marcia Blue and has three children: Danielle, Matthew, and Nathan.

Dean has a daughter, Tember, and is married to Linda Petersen. David married Rochelle Bice and they have one son, Jacob.

Joan was born August 6, 1946, in Manning. She graduated from Manning High School in 1964 and attended Northwest Missouri University for two years. On July 3, 1966, she married Edward Lewis Rohlfs from Avoca, Iowa. They both graduated from Brigham Young University with degrees in education. They have one son, Eric, born January 9, 1971, in Longview, Washington. He is now attending college in Virginia. Ed works at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia. They reside across the James River in Smithfield, Virginia.

George died December 16, 1989, in Manning. He is buried in the family plot in the Manning Cemetery.

HARRIET AND LYLE GROSS


Harriett and Lyle Gross

Lyle, son of Melvin and Luella Gross, was born in Durbin, North Dakota, in 1932. He was married to Harriet Brown in June, 1957, daughter of F. Willard and Edna Brown of Sac City, Iowa. They made their home on the Adams Ranch near Odebolt, Iowa, from 1957-1962 where Lyle worked as a herdsman. They moved to Lewisburg, West

Virginia in 1962 where Lyle worked as a herdsman for Morlunda Farms. In 1964 they moved to Manning, Iowa, to work for Wiese and Sons, where Lyle is still employed. Over the years, Lyle has groomed and shown many Hereford champions in cattle shows all over the United States and earned many awards, including Hereford Herdsman of the Year at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver in 1977.

Harriet started working for Ranniger, Heithoff, and Company (now Heithoff Associates) when they started business in 1979, and is still employed there. Lyle and Harriet are both active members of the United Methodist Church, Carroll County Farm Bureau, as well as other community organizations.

Lyle and Harriet are the parents of three children: Lori, born in 1959, graduated from Manning High School in 1977, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, in 1981 and earned a Masters of Reading Education degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1990. She is presently employed by the Waterloo Public School system as a remedial reading teacher. Randy, born in 1962, graduated from Manninq High School in 1980, and Tulsa Welding School in 1989. He married Pam Brown of Ryan, Oklahoma, in July, 1983, and they have one son, Michael Jay. They presently live in Baytown, Texas, where Randy works as a certitied pipeline welder. Kyle, born in 1963, graduated from Manning High School in 1981. He married Jamie Miller of Henrietta, Texas, in 1983, and they have two children: Jennifer and Joseph. They presently live in Olney, Texas, where Kyle works in the transport division of Conoco Oil Company.

DOROTHY GRUNDMEIER


Dorothy and Clausie Strosahl.

Dorothy (Moore) Strosahl, Grundmeier, daughter of Clinton and Alice (McKeever) Moore, was married to Clausie Strosahl in 1947. To this union were born four children: Dianna, Carolyn, Marilyn, and Bill.

Dianna married Allen Seedorff and they are the parents of three children: Lori, Tim, and adopted Heidi. The family resides in Waterloo, Iowa.

Carolyn married Randy McLimas and they have four children: Tina, Brenda, Angle, and Adam. Their home is in Marquette, Iowa.

Marilyn and her family live in Westside, Iowa. She is married to Gail Mumm and they have two children: Tony and Joel.

Dorothy and Ralph Grundmeier.

Bill is in Bellevue, Nebraska, and is married to Joleen Muhlbauer. They have two girls: Devon and Lauren.

Dorothy's mother passed away in November of 1977, and her father in May of 1990.

Her husband, Clausie, passed away in 1974.

In 1982 Dorothy married Ralph Grundmeier. He passed away in 1992.

Dorothy has been employed in the office of the Natural Gas Department since 1975.
