FREDA AND LEROY DAMMANN

Freda and LeRoy Dammann have two daughters. LeAnn graduated from high school at Manning in 1988, and attended ISU, graduating in May of 1992. She married Tony Jesina of Toledo, Iowa on June 20, 1992. They reside in Marshalltown, Iowa, where Tony `is a loan officer with Farm Credit Services, and LeAnn works at Ford's Flower Shop and teaches dance at Deb's Dance World. Leslee graduated from Manning in 1991 and is now attending American Institute of Business in Des Moines. LeRoy is a member of Rotary and the Manning Development Corporation. Freda is a member of PEO and, along with LeRoy, a member of the Manning Heritage Foundation Board and the Haus Barn Committee.

GERTRUDE AND HUGO "Shorty" DAMMANN

Hugo Dammann, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dammann, and Gertrude Farley Niederfrank, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Farley of Perry, were married in the Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa, on March 11, 1947.

They moved to Aspinwall to their first home with Gertrude's daughter by her first marriage, Sharon Rae Niederfrank, age five.

Shorty worked for Leo Bruck at ManCryCo Farms until 1950. He then started driving truck for Manning Creamery Company. He continued in that position even after the company was sold to Wells Blue Bunny. He had a perfect driving record with no accidents for more than 31 years. Gertrude worked at the Manning Creamery for eight years in the ice cream and butter departments.

They bought their first home at 1006 So. Main Street in Manning in September, 1953. This is where a daughter, Dottie Dee, was born on December 28, 1953. Twin sons, Rick and Rob, were born on February 5, 1958. All four children graduated from Manning High School. The family belongs to the Methodist Church.

Sharon Rae is married to Dr. Allan J. Swanson, a cardiologist in the Mason City, Iowa, area. They have two daughters, Stacy and Kristine. Stacy is a phlebotomist at the Gillette, Wyoming, hospital and Kristine is working on her masters in speech pathology at Loma Linda University in Redlands, California.

Dottie married Robert Schiltz of Manilla, and they have two children, Joel, age 16, and KaDee, age 14. Robert recently retired after 20 years in the air force, and Dottie retired from the civil service after 18 years. They recently purchased a home three miles west of Manning. Dottie is employed by the Manning School as secretary and treasurer.

Rob married Cathy Ramsey, also of Manning, and they have two daughters, Shelby Lynn and Caylee Marie. Cathy has a day care in their home. Rob works at the Aspinwall Coop Elevator. They bought a home in Manning and live at 621 5th Street.

Rick resides in Manning at 904 Park Street and is the owner/operator of the Twin Transfer Company.

Shorty is now retired from Wells Blue Bunny and is active with the VFW Post 3517 and Drill Team, American Legion, and Congregate Meals.

Gertie retired from the Manning School Hot Lunch Program in 1988, after 15 years of service. She is an active member of the Methodist Church, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Bowling League.

JOYCE AND WESLEY DAMMANN

Wes and Joyce Dammann are both residents and graduates of Manning High School.

Wes is the youngest son of Arlo and Betty Dammann's three children and was born and raised around Manning. He graduated from high school in 1977 and has held various jobs around the community. On April 19, 1980, Wes married Joyce Justice at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning. The couple made their home at 125 First Street until May, 1989, when they began to purchase part of the family farm three miles south of town. This is where they now make their home. Julius and Ella Dammann had lived on the farm when Ella sold it to Arlo and Betty Dammann. Wes and Joyce are now purchasing it from Arlo and Betty.

Joyce is the oldest daughter of Wayne and Arlene Justice of Botna. Joyce joined the Manning Community School fourth grade class in 1969. After high school graduation she attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Council Bluffs. In August, 1979, she graduated and took state boards in September, 1979. She was employed at LeBoutique Salon by owner Eileen Prebeck from September, 1979, to January 1981. At that time, Joyce opened The Hair Gallery at their residence at 125 First Street, Manning, which she still owns and operates.

Wes and Joyce are parents of three daughters: Jacqueline Marie was born March 28, 1983, Erin Elizabeth was born July 19, 1986, and Alyssa Claire on August 10, 1990. Jacquie is 9 years old and in the fourth grade. Erin is 6 years old and in kindergarten at Manning Community School. Alyssa is two years old.

They are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning.

VIRGINIA AND KENNETH DETHLEFS

Erica Lynne Lohrmann, Virginia and Kenneth Dethlefs, Georgia Lohrmann, JoAnn Karsten.

Kenneth George Dethlefs was born in Alton, Iowa, on March 19, 1915, the son of George and Ida Roggendorf Dethlefs. The family moved to Manning where Kenny started school and graduated in 1933. Also in 1933, he attended the first All-Star game in Chicago, where he saw Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

In 1935 he enrolled in a baseball school at Hot Springs, Arkansas, also attended by Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Johnny Mostil, and George Sisler. When he came back from the school, he

worked in the Klean Klose Shop with his parents, and which he finally owned for 40 years.

Kenny played pro-ball with Sioux City, in 1938, but due to a knee injury, he was released. He came back to Manning and was drafted in 1941 and served for six months, when he received a medical discharge. He then went to Long Beach where he worked for Cal-Ship for 17 months.

He managed a town baseball team and also a softball team in the late 40's. He was responsible for starting the fireworks display in conjunction with the 4th of July celebration in Manning. It has now been discontinued.

In 1951 Kenny married Virginia Brown from Irwin. She attended ISTC, now UNI, for two years and graduated from Drake in 1967 with a B.S. degree. She taught in Peru, Iowa; Irwin; Manilla; Denison; and Manning, where she taught kindergarten for 24 years. She had a total of 36 years of teaching. She is a member of Chapter IS P.E.O., the L & M bowling team, United Methodist Women, and is a Sunday School teacher at the United Methodist Church.

They are the parents of two daughters, JoAnn, Mrs. Jim Karsten, who graduated from Iowa U in 1974. She also took a fifth year at Buena Vista in library science. She taught four years at Glidden and is presently working at Manning Trust & Savings Bank. She plays the organ in the Methodist Church, is a member of Chapter IS P.E.O., and teaches Sunday School.

Georgia, Mrs. Rick Lohrmann, attended ISU and U of I for two years. She is a member of the choir at the Lutheran Church and does solo work. She has worked at Commercial Savings Bank in Carroll for 18 years. Rick and Georgia have one daughter, Erica Lynne, who is 12 years old.

DENISE AND TOM DOYEL

Tom and Denise (Hinners) Doyel moved to 344 2nd Street, Manning, Iowa, January of 1983, after living on a farm southwest of Manning for 9 years. Tom purchased a garage and small engine repair service from C.O. Edmunds along with driving school bus for Manning. Denise was employed at AGRI Industries from 1981 until 1985 as bookkeeper until she acquired employment at Manning Trust & Savings Bank as teller and bookkeeper. Tom sold the station to Aspinwall Coop in 1986, and became employed at AG Processing in maintenance until Augsut, 1990, at which time he became employed at Manning Equipment and Repair, where he currently maintains the small engine department. In December, 1990, Denise was promoted to vice president at Manning Trust & Savings Bank. The couple have five children: Travis, 18 attending college at Teikyo Westmar, LeMars; Melanie, 16; Zachary, 13; Brandon, 10; and Jacob, 9, all attending school in Manning.

MARCELLA AND DALE EHLERS

Marcella (Marcy), daughter of Clifford and Lorrine Danner, was born February 23, 1949, at St. Anthony Hospital, Carroll, Iowa. She attended St. Joseph's School in Dedham, and graduated from Kuemper High School, Carroll, Iowa, in 1967. Dale is the son of Hazel Ehlers and the late Freddie Ehlers. Dale was born on March 26, 1944, in Manning, Iowa. Dale attended Hayes No. 8 (country school) through eighth grade and graduated from the Manning High School in 1962.

On September 23, 1972, Dale and Marcy were married at the St. Joseph's Church in Dedham, Iowa, with Father Henry Meyer as pastor. They lived in Irwin, Iowa , for three and one-half years before moving to Buck Grove, where they owned and operated the Golden Nugget Lounge. In March of 1988, they bought the Main Course (formerly Saunders Steak House), sold their business and house in Buck Grove and moved to Manning where they own and operate the Golden Nugget today.

The couple had two children, Amy Jo, who died at birth on September 2, 1979, and Holly Jo, who was born on December 16, 1983, at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa. Dale, Marcy and Holly are members of the Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Marcy is a member of the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America No. 454 of Templeton, Iowa, president of the Manning Chamber of Commerce, and also drives the transit bus for Region XII, Council of Governments, Carroll, Iowa. Dale is a member of the Manning Rotary Club and is a substitute mail carrier out of Manilla, Iowa.

Together the family enjoys collecting antique cars and tractors. They belong to the Studebaker Car Club and Iowa Street Rods Car Club. They like to go on trips when possible, and ride motorcycle.

MOLLIE AND JOHN (Jacob) FIELWEBER

John (Jacob) Fielweber, son of Jacob and Catherine Fielweber, was born on a farm near Manilla, Iowa, where he attended rural schools. He later moved to Manning.

Amalie (Mollie) Wenzel, daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina Schwartz Wenzel, was born June 24, 1891, near Manilla and attended schools there. In 1912 she moved with her family to Fort Dodge where she became the bride of Jacob Fielweber on February 24, 1914. They then made their home in Manning.

Jacob was a contractor in the construction business and was later joined in the business by his two sons, Arthur and Charles. He retired in 1962.

Mollie passed away February 3, 1968, and Jacob on January 11, 1970. They were lifelong members of Zion Lutheran Church.

The Fielwebers were parents of five children: Arthur, Arlene, Ermyle, Ellen, and Charles.

There were five grandchildren and later, five greatgrandchildren. Arthur married Frances Lage in 1942, and they moved to the farm after he served in the military. He assisted his father as a carpenter until 1964 when he began farming. Frances passed away in 1980.

Arlene, medical technician, married Maynard Tapps of Manson. They had two children, Connie and Susan. Connie married Steve Ringley now of Ames, and they have Andrew and Peter. Susan, Mrs. Doug Rieder of Jefferson, has two boys, Ryan and Brent.

Ermyle worked several places in Fort Dodge and Manning, then moved to Sioux City to work for twelve years before moving to Long Beach, California. She worked in Los Angeles until she retired and is now living in Manning.

Ellen, after graduation, was a clerk for three years and then moved to Sioux City. In 1957 she moved to Long Beach, California, and worked in Los Angeles until she retired in 1990. In October she returned to Manning to make her home.

Charles assisted his father and in 1952 married Marlyn Gruhn. In 1960 they purchased the A.H. Hinz Building and Supply Yard, which became the Town and Country Lumber Yard. Charles continued in the construction business, and in 1969 the company expanded into the speculated home business, with the Fielwebers building a number of new homes in Manning since that time.

In 1992 the company sold its' site to the Manning Housing Corporation and the buildings have been razed to make room for a planned four-plex apartment building. Charles continues to work in construction.

Charles and Marlyn had three children: Clyde, who is a computer supervisor and programmer for City Bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Gwen is a fashion merchandiser and buyer for the Landons clothing stores of Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska; Scott, who lives in Des Moines, is a computer systems analyst. He and his wife Jean have one child, Cole Edward.

George Heinrich Frederich Fischer, grandfather of George and Eddie Fischer of Manning, was born in Linsburg, Hanover, Germany, December 29, 1851, to Johann Heinrich Wilhelm and Maria Dodothes Louise Bergman Fischer. Fred immigrated to America with his parents, two sisters, and a brother, and settled in the Guttenberg, Iowa area. The family farmed there for seventeen years before coming to Walnut, Iowa.

On February 2, 1878, Fred married Wilhelmina Marie Duwe. She was born near Guttenberg, July 7, 1859, and after their marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, the young couple returned to Walnut, Iowa, and worked his father's farm for ten years. They then purchased land and moved to Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa.

Nine children were born to Fred and Mina: Anna Wilhelmina (Mrs. Gustav Ress); Emma, Henry C. who married Anna Jansen; Lucie; August, who married Amelia Fuss; Ida (Mrs. John Dammann); Dora (Mrs. William Dammann); Ella (Mrs. Harry Schade); Herman, who married Ella Harder.

Fred's success at farming was evidenced by his accumulation of 1080 acres of land in Audubon County, 160 acres in Shelby County, 240 acres in Crawford County, and later 160 acres in Carroll County in 1928.

Mr. Fischer was an active worker in Township, community, and Trinity Lutheran Church affairs and later with the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He also served one year as president of the bank in Gray and as an investment partner with a brother-in-law, John Polzin, in the mercantile business there.

On November 28, 1910, they retired from farm life and moved to Manning, for two years living at 111 Ann Street. Mr. Fischer then purchased all of Block 81 facing Sue Street between Second and Third Streets with the exception of the northwest corner lot, and later selling the south part. The residence address was 214 Sue Street and remained their home until their deaths in 1943.

The Fischers observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary with services at the Zion Lutheran Church, at that time located on the south side of Second Street two blocks east of their home. The couple rode in a car to the church, while a procession of a hundred and forty-five relatives and friends marched the distance. Mrs. Fischer's dress was fashioned by her daughter, Ella Schade, and she carried a bouquet of yellow tea roses. An appropriate sermon for the occasion was delivered by the Reverend J.M. Ansorge. Mrs. Ansorge played the "Wedding March". After the services a dinner for one hundred, twentyeight guests was held at their home.

Mr. Fischer passed away January 4, 1943, and Mrs. Fischer February 23, 1943.
