SHARLENE AND LEROY ALBERTSEN

LeRoy and Sharlene Albertsen still farm one mile east and three and one half miles north of Manning.

Their daughter, Kristine, graduated from Manning High School in 1986. She earned a B.A. degree from Buena Vista College in 1990, majoring in accounting. In July of 1990, she was notified that she had passed the certified public accounting exam, and she is now employed by Deloitte and Touche in Omaha, Nebraska.

Their son, Karl, graduated from Manning High School in 1988 and earned an Associate in Applied Science degree from Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, majoring in agribusiness/farm management. Karl now farms with his parents. He lives on a farm northwest of Audubon.

JEAN AND RANDY BEHRENS

Randy Behrens, son of Harry and Dorothy Kraus Behrens, was born and raised near Templeton, Iowa. He attended grade school in Templeton, graduated from Kuemper High School in 1968 and from Fort Dodge Community College in 1969. He became employed at the Aspinwall Cooperative that same year as assistant manager.

Jean Stangl, daughter of Michael and Agatha Scherbring Stangl, was born in the Manning General Hospital and raised in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She attended Annunciation Grade School and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1968. That same year she became office manager of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce.

Randy and Jean met at a Young Adults dance in 1970 and were married May 29, 1971. They lived in Templeton and on an acreage north of Templeton before moving to Manning in March of 1986.

Randy is currently manager (1980) of the Aspinwall Cooperative and serves on the Manning General Hospital Board of Directors. Jean is employed by the Manning Municipal Gas Department (1988), assists at the Manning Information and Development Office and does some writing for the Manning Monitor. Both are involved in Manning organizations.

Randy and Jean have four children. Chris graduated from Manning High School in 1990 and is a junior at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. Curt is a 1992 Manning graduate and is currently working in Des Moines. Lyndi, a freshman, and Chad, a sixth grader, attend classes at Manning Community School. The family are members of the Sacred Heart Parish in Manning.

MARLENE AND LYLE BORKOWSKI

Lyle Borkowski was born and raised in the Manning area. He served in the army during the Vietnam conflict. He is now employed as a carpenter in the area.

Marlene, his wife, was born in Ames, Iowa, and lived there until graduating from Iowa State University. She moved to Manning in 1972 to teach elementary school. She is still teaching.

Lyle and Marlene were married June 11, 1983. They are the parents of two daughters: Kari Lynn, born January 15, 1987, and Amy Jo, born November 26, 1989.

MINDI AND KEVIN BOYLE

Kevin Boyle moved to Manning August of 1986, due to his employment by Manning Trust & Savings Bank as vice president and ag loan officer. On June 18, 1988, Kevin and Mindi Boyle were married, and at that time they purchased a duplex on 52 May Street, Manning, Iowa. Their first child, Toni, was born March 19, 1991. Kevin was promoted to president of Manning Trust & Savings Bank December, 1991, and currently Mind! is employed at Manning General Hospital working for the Director of Nursing.

REBECCA AND REV. MARSHALL BROWN

In August, 1989, Marshall Brown was called to be the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Manning. The son of J. Neilson and Esther B. Brown, he is a native of Sheridan, Wyoming, and had previously served churches in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Sanford, North Carolina.

He is married to the former Rebecca Fritz, daughter of Royal D. and Jane M. Fritz. Rebecca Brown is from Sanford, North Carolina. The Browns have two children: Paul, born in 1981, and Sarah, born in 1983.

DEAH AND HERBERT BRUHN

Herbert Bruhn was born in Carroll County on March eighth, 1927. His father was William Bruhn, who came to America in 1904 from Erfde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany., In 1922 he married Wilhelmina Hansen, who was a Carroll County native. They farmed southeast of Manning.

They were the parents of six children: George (deceased), twins Anna Stillman, and Herbert, Edna Nissen, Louise Philpott, and William, Jr.

Following two years in the Korean conflict, Herbert started farming north of Manning. In August, 1980, he married Deah West. He is a life member of the Carroll County Historical Society, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

JUDY AND CLAUS BUNZ

Sara graduated from Drake University with a major in music education in 1985. She is married to Reverend Jeffrey Pulse and teaches vocal music. They reside in Burt, Iowa, with their two children, Nathaniel, born in 1989, and Jonathan, born in 1991.

John graduated from Luther College with majors in economics and business managements in 1987 and with a Juris Doctor Degree in Law from Drake University in 1990. He lives with his wife, Susan, who is also a lawyer, in Olathe, Kansas. He currently practices law in the Kansas City area.

Anne graduated from Luther College in 1989 with a major in social work. She currently lives and works in Fort Dodge, Iowa, with Lutheran Family Services in the areas of adoption and family counseling.

JOE L. CLARK

Shown above is Joe L. Clark, on the left, with another relative. Joe came to this area with other early settlers who were moving in to start a town. He was here to witness the first building to be built on Main Street.
His older brother had preceded him and was settled in the vicinity of Botna.
Joe worked for a butcher who furnished meat for the crews who were building roads in the area with the use of horses. The depot was built near the west end of Park Avenue.

CATHERINE AND JEROME CROGHAN

Jerome Francis Croghan, son of William and Helen (Keane) Croghan, and Catherine Agnes Schmitz, daughter of Peter and Catherine (Windeshausen) Schmitz, were married February 14, 1950, at Panama, Iowa. They moved to a farm near Botna that was known as Long Branch. Here they established a dairy farm and raised their thirteen children. All their family attended and graduated from the Manning Community School.

Julia married Michael Fitzgerald of St. Louis, Missouri. They live at Winfield, Illinois. Michael works for the Mariott Food Service at Lyle, Illinois, and Julia collates Bible studies for a publishing company. Their children are Lisa. Deborah, James, Mary, Brian, Matthew, and Sarah.

Mary married David Ensch. Both are nurses at the University of Madison at Madison, Wisconsin. They have two daughters, Julia and Catherine.

Ruth married Gary Callahan and they live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gary works for Cry-O-Vac, and Ruth is the purchasing agent for the Cedar Rapids school system. Their children are Joseph, Andrew, Sean, Alan, and Rachel.

Peter married Lois Wanninger and they live west of Manning. Peter owns Croghan Construction, and Lois runs the Country Interiors of Manning. They are parents of four daughters, Chelsie, Ashley, Lindsey, and McKaylie.

Mark married Carol Justice. They live in Sioux City, Iowa. Mark is a supervisor for A.G.P. at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Carol works for Farm Bureau. Adam and Scott are their children.

Dennis married Lynette Blum. They live on a farm northeast of Manilla. Lynette works at the Manilla Manor, and Dennis keeps busy raising corn, beans, and hogs. Their children are Maria, Nicole, Jeremy, and Eric.

Owen married Luann Blum. They live in Alton, Iowa. Owen is an electrician for Tyson Foods in Orange City, Iowa, and Luann is a dental assistant. They have a son, Thomas.

Joan is married to Rodney Young. They live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rod works for National Oats, and Joan teaches business and computer in the Marion school system. They are the parents of three sons, Ryan, Bradley, and Nathan.

Luke farms the home place, Long Branch. He married Linda Irlmeier and they have a newborn daughter, Frankie.

Willie married Diana Kisling of Urbana, Iowa. They live on an acreage north of Cedar Rapids, and both work in Cedar Rapids. Willie is employed at Rockwell International, and Diana works in Medical Records at St. Luke's Hospital.

Paul married Brenda Irlmeier. They live east of Irwin. Paul teaches in the Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla school system.

Alice and Catherine are juniors at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Both are studying to be teachers.

After forty-one years of dairying and living on the same farm, Jerome and Catherine sold the dairy herd and moved two miles east of the Long Branch place to a new home in April, 1991.

NANCY AND GERALD CROGHAN

Gerald Croghan, son of Joseph and Margaret Croghan of Manning, was born September 13, 1963. He attended school in Manning and graduated in 1982. He owned his own furniture refinishing business called "The Final Touch" for two years and then moved to Austin, Texas, where he worked with his brother, Dave, in the carpentry business.

On August 3, 1985, Jerry married Nancy Schechinger, daughter of Ellsworth and Grace Schechinger of Manilla. Nancy graduated from Manilla High School in 1983 and attended Iowa Western Community College, where she earned her associated degree in nursing.

Jerry and Nancy moved to Chandler, Arizona, in August, 1985, where they resided for five years. Jerry worked in carpentry business, building residential houses and also attended college. He received an associate degree in applied science (construction drafting). Nancy worked in The Desert Samaritan Medical Centers as an R.N.

In March, 1991, they moved back to Iowa. They now reside and farm Jerry's parents' farm south of Manning. Nancy is employed at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. They have four children: Justin was born June, 1986; Chantel in January, 1988; Megan in September, 1989; and Jerad, October, 1991. They are expecting their fifth child in November, 1992.

MARGARET AND JOSEPH CROGHAN

Joseph Croghan, son of Wm. and Helen (Keane) Croghan was born in Harrison County in 1927. He married Margaret Schmitz December 28, 1948. Margaret was born in Shelby county in 1929. Her parents were Peter and Catherine (Windeshausen) Schmitz.

They both graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in Panama, Iowa, and farmed the first year of their married life in the Panama area.

In 1950, they moved to a farm south of Manning known as "Long Branch." In 1952 they purchased 200 acres of this land and set up a "grade A dairy operation" selling milk to the Manning Creamery and later to Mid-Am of Omaha. In 1984-85 a new house was built on this farm with the help of their children and families.

They are parents to nine children - all graduates of Manning High School.

John, born 1950, married Mary Wieland. They have five children: Kelly, Brian, Shawn, Jason and Jennifer. Kelly married Brenda Marten. They have two children, Johnathon and Makayla. John died in 1985.

Bill, born in 1952 (a graduate of Iowa Law Enforcement Academy) married Virginia Wieland. They have three children: Steve, Sherry, and Shannon. They live in Carroll.

David, born in 1955 (a construction superintendent) has a son, Chris.

Charles, born in 1957 (AIB graduate) lives in Manning.

Patricia, born in 1958 (LNA) married Marc Arp. They have three children: Kyle, Stacy, and Ryan. They live in Manning.

JoAnn, born 1960 (hair stylist) married Terry Halbur. They have three children: Jessica, Amy, and Eric. They live in California.

Jerry, born 1964 (graduate Mesa Community College) married Nancy Schechinger. They have four children: Justin, Chantel, Megan, and Jerad. They live near Manning.

Jim, born 1969 (graduate of N.W.M.S.) lives in Maryville, Missouri.

In 1991 Joe and Margaret purchased a home on Ann Street in Manning. They are members of Sacred Heart Church. Joe is semi-retired and Margaret works for the Manning Plaza. Their son, Jerry, lives on the family farm.

LOIS AND PETER CROGHAN

Peter J. Crogan and Lois M. Younie (Wanninger) were united in marriage June 30, 1984, at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa. Pete is the son of Jerome and Catherine Croghan of Manning, and Lois is the daughter of Teresa Wanninger of Manning, and the late William Wanninger, Sr.

Pete and Lois lived on an acreage four miles west of Manilla from 1984, to 1986. In August of 1986, they purchased the Irvin and Sophia Heckenliable acreage, which is located one mile west of Manning.

They have four daughters. Chelsie Marie was born March 21, 1985, Ashley Ann was born June 19, 1986, Lindsey Rae was born August 2, 1987, and McKaylie Jean was born October 8, 1990.

Pete is owner of Croghan Construction in Manning. Lois is owner of Country Interiors in Manning. They are members of the Sacred Heart Church in Manning for the past six years. Pete is actively involved with the EMT (ambulance crew) of Manning General Hospital. He has also held a woodworking class for the 4-H groups for about four years. Pete and Lois both were active in the Chamber of Commerce with Pete being president for one year. Lois also belongs to the Manning Lady Jaynes.
