Our School

Remembering Manning's School

To help remember the Manning School over the past 10 years, the school yearbooks and superintendent reports were reviewed and highlights listed. Brian Lage's super statistics in football and basketball were sought, and coaches and administrators were bombarded with questions. The highlights show Manning students excelling in many areas of academics, athletics, music, and other extracurricular activities.

Unfortunately, the highlights don't show what Manning should be most proud of: providing a solid educational background for all of its students. This section, therefore, is dedicated to the dozens of unnamed but essential teachers, janitors, secretaries, cooks, bus drivers, nurses, administrators, and other staff members whose glory is in being conscientious educators and role models for our children.

As one looks over the Manning School since 1981, some things appear vastly different while others remain amazingly the same.

In 1981, computers were just making their way into our school system. The building boasted a grand total of four computers, and it was the first year of teaching a lone computer class. Today, the elementary wing has 21 computers, mostly Apple IIGS models which feature high-powered graphics and sound. In the secondary wing there are 30 computers, mainly Macintoshes. All freshmen and sophomore students are required to take data processing. Exploratory classes are offered to junior high school students, advanced classes are given in high school, and teachers in grades kindergarten through 12th grade use computers as a part of their instruction.

Other changes have developed to keep Manning students up-to-date and prepared for the future. College composition and calculus have been added for college-bound students, a computerized "accelerated readers" program initiated to encourage the reading of literature, cross-grade summer school classes started to give elementary students a boost in the three R's, and pre-kindergarten classes begun.

While many schools across Iowa are being forced into whole-grade sharing agreements or consolidations, Manning has remained an independent system. The district is the same size it was in 1981, 111.8 square miles. In order to continue offering a wide variety of classes, several staff members are shared with neighboring districts.

In 1981, Manning had 66 employees with a payroll of $961,672. In 199.1, there were 65 employees with a payroll of $1,444,909. The total in 1991.

The base pay for teachers was $11,000 in 1981 and $17,400 in 1991. The new word in the late '80's was "Phase Money," with Governor Terry Branstad's plan to raise the minimum teacher salary to $18,000 through two phases of state aid, and to raise teacher standards through a third phase.

Declining enrollment has been a severe problem throughout Iowa during the past ten years, with many schools closing or staff being reduced as a result. Although Manning's enrollment has dropped somewhat over this time - 568 students in 1981 compared to 545 students in 1991 - our school has actually seen growth in recent years!

Several reasons can be cited for the rise in numbers: the opening of Quakerdale, which has sent around 20 new students to our school each year; open enrollment, in which students from neighboring districts such as from the Templeton and Aspinwall areas can petition into our district; and, of course, the move into Manning by new families attracted by our hospital, industry, recreational facilities, and lower-cost housing.

The school building, completed in 1973, has changed little during this time. The bond levy for the high school section was retired November 1, 1990, and no major changes are foreseen.

Administrators

Wayne Curlile, elementary-junior high principal since 1965, became superintendent with the retiring of Paul Bjorkgren in 1986. Curlile continues as elementary principal.

The high school principals have been Daniel Smith, 1979-1982, Doug Kennedy, 1982-1983, and Don Ringgenberg, since 1983. Ringgenberg has also been principal of the junior high since 1986.

School Board Members

Current members of the Manning School Board are Kenneth Puck, Charles Moore, Scott Renze, Allen Stribe (all graduates of Manning), and Pastor Robert Riggert. Others who have served since 1981 are Warren Puck, George Opperman, Millicent Wiese, Tom Bandow, Ron Hodne, Robert Wegner, Donna Halbur, Dr. Robert Vonnahme, and Barry Dunshee.

Moore One of Top Ten On State Academic Team

Brent Moore, a 1991 graduate of Manning High School, was named to the Des Moines Register All State Academic Team on Apr. 28, 1991. This team comprises the paper's selection of the top ten graduating seniors in the state of Iowa. The Register honors students each spring in a special education edition of their newspaper.

Regional judges looked for students who are well rounded individuals; those that exhibit leadership, community involvement, scholastic ability, as well as achievement in extra-curricular activities. Brent and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Moore, were honored guests at a luncheon at the Des Moines Club with the Publishing staff of the Register.

Brent is presently a student at Iowa State University.

Knowledge Master Open

The Knowledge Master Open is an academic contest where students answer questions on a computer with the results being sent to the national headquarters at Durango, Colorado. The contest was created in the fall of 1983 and Manning High School started participating in the spring of 1984.

Manning usually has 12 members on the team and they work together to give one answer to the 200 questions. There is a time limit in answering each of these questions and the test covers all areas of academics.

The Manning team has scored very well every year and has scored in the top ten in Iowa a number of times. The 1986 spring team won the national contest for small schools. The captain of that team was Dan Kemper and the team members were Alison Beaver, Craig Bogatzke, Matt Campbell, Sean Forman, Jeff Jensen, Chris Kemper, Ann Lamb, Scott Mills, Aaron Nelson, Heidi Ringgenberg, and Cheryl Tinkham.

Future Problem Solving Bowl

Teams from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades have been taking part in this state-wide activity since 1984, under the direction of the Talented and Gifted (former name) or Extended Learning Program (current name) coordinator. Students are presented with a current, growing problem which is also predicted for the 21st Century, such as acid rain or the homeless. They then follow a specific process to determine the best solutions to the predicted problem of the future.

Manning has had entries into the state FPS bowl every year since the program began. To reach this stage, the team must place either first or second in the regional meet, where they compete with teams from much larger cities such as Ames and Des Moines.

I CAN REMEMBER--

When "knights of the roads" in the 30's were often seen in town. One of them created a life sized soldier laying as if just fallen on the dirt bank of the Nishnabotna River. It was created with the creek mud and very detailed with a rifle in his arms, a canteen, and even the laces in his boots. Many people viewed this and left money for the artist. In two days the sun ruined it and the artist moved on.

It would cost the district $400. Those for it said it would increase attendance of both grade and high school. Those against said it would transmit disease.

1916 - The Manning Creamery Co. paid an 8% dividend to its stockholders.
