April 4: Alvin Schilling was the winner in the spelling contest held in the local school Friday. Marian Ranniger, a fifth grader, ranked second in the oral contest while Alice Brady, an eighth grader, ranked second in the oral contest. Alvin is in the eighth grade. This is the second consecutive year that Alvin has won. He will receive a certificate of award from Mr. F.N. Olry, County Superintendent.

April 13: An Easter party was enjoyed at the local school Friday afternoon. Exchange of colored eggs, Easter baskets and bunnies was made. Big chocolate bunnies and balloons were a treat to all and a grand time was had by everyone. Gene Ehrichs and Joe Brandt were visitors.

April 27: Mrs. Delpha Olson and Miss Helen Wegner took a group of their pupils to Denison Friday evening where they participated in an amateur contest. Those taking part were Robert Schilling, Donna Belle and Betty Lou Ehrichs, Laverne Boyens, Roy Soll, Alice Brady and Donna Schacht. Others who went from here were Mr. Clyde Olson, Mr. and Mrs. John Schilling and sons, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Schroeder and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ehrichs, Otto Haberlei and Wilmer Ehrichs.

May 19 graduates were LaVerne Boyens, age 12, Alice Brady, Engelbert Brandt, and Alvin Schilling, all age 13. Mrs. Olson was their teacher.

September 7: The Aspinwall School opened Monday with an enrollment of 27. The Grammar room taught by Mrs. Delpha Olson has 13 pupils. Merlin Anderson is a new pupil in the 7th grade. Miss Helen Wegner teaches the Primary room with 14 pupils. Melvin Sinow, Gene Ehrichs, LeRoy Dammann and Joe Brandt are beginners.

October 5: 5th graders are Robert Schilling, Donna Belle Ehrichs and Catherine Brandt; 6th graders are Ruth Brady, Alvin Jansen, Marian Ranniger, Donna Schacht and Roy Soll; 7th graders are Merlin Anderson and Sophie Brandt; 8th graders are Olivia Bueltel, Shirley Ann Ehrichs and Betty Lou Ehrichs.

Those having perfect attendance for the month of September were Robert Schilling, Catherine Brandt, Donna Belle Ehrichs, Ruth Brady, Alvin Jansen, Roy Soll, Marian Ranniger, Donna Schacht, Sophie Brandt, Shirley Ann Ehrichs and Olivia Bueltel.

Donna Belle Ehrichs, Betty Lou Ehrichs and Alvin Jansen had their names put on the dental chart this month. They had their teeth checked and yellow dental cards returned. In science, the Grammar grades have been studying snakes.

Each morning we have health inspections. We must have clean hands, clean nails, clean handkerchiefs, teeth brushed and hair combed and brushed. The Grammar grades studied the picture, "The Farmhouse," painted by artist George Morland, last week. The eighth grade has begun a product map of Europe for use in Geography. Betty Lou Ehrichs and Merlin Anderson were each absent one-half day this month on account of illness.

In Citizenship, the grammar grades have organized the "Sunshine Club." Its purpose is to help make us better citizens. The following officers were elected: President Shirley Ann Ehrichs, Vice President Olivia Bueltel, Secretary Sophie Brandt and Treasurer Ruth Brady. It was decided that we meet once a month. Our club song is: "Our Club Will Shine Today!!" Plans were made to issue a monthly paper called the "News Hi-lite."

October 12: Marian Ranniger and Roy Schilling observed their birthdays Friday, October 6th. Frances Soll celebrated her birthday Wednesday, October 4th. Roy and Frances both brought a birthday cake and shared it with their schoolmates and teachers in honor of the event.

The first six weeks will be up Friday, the 13th. Everyone is busy reviewing the taking of their six weeks tests.

Shirley Rose Schroeder, LeRoy Dammann and Rosalia Brandt were on the sick list last week.

March 18: A spelling contest was held in school Monday. Sophia Brandt, who is in the seventh grade, proved to be the first place winner. Olivia Bueltel ranked second and Shirley Ann Ehrichs ranked third. Sophia will enter the county contest at Denison April 6th.

April: Robert Schilling, Norma Meggers, Alvin Jansen, Ruth Brady, Betty Lou and Donna Belle Ehrichs and Donna Schacht (the Aspinwall Swingsters) took part in the contest staged at the Denison High School Auditorium Friday evening of last week. LaVerne Boyens was accompanist on the accordion. All were well pleased with the Superior rating received for the three selections rendered.

Olivia Bueltel, Betty Ehrichs, and Shirley Ehrichs, all 13, graduated in May. Mrs. Olson was their teacher.

1941 Sophie Brandt, Ruth Brady, Donna Schacht, Roy Soll, and Alvin Jansen, all 13, graduated May 15. Aurelia Lamp was their teacher.

1943-1944 Four fourth grade pupils of Dorothy Ehrichs entertained at a Crawford County Teacher's Meeting in Denison. They sang, among others, "This is the Army, Mr. Brown" and "Comin' in on a Wing and a Prayer." Included were Roy Schilling, Wallace Schroeder, Gene Ehrichs and LeRoy Dammann.

Many of the Aspinwall School teachers were qualified to teach after they had completed a high school Normal Training Course. Certificates were signed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, such as this one for Delpha Olson. This certificate of 1941 was a recertification, which occurred every three years.
