Roger John Nissen
Roger J. Nissen of Carroll, son of George and Hilda (Opperman) Nissen, entered the Army January 4, 1944. He was inducted at Denison, and trained at Camp Blanding, Florida, Camp Maxey, Texas, and Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi.
He was discharged at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri November 21, 1944. He held the rank of Private and served for 10 months.

He is presently employed by Inter North - Northern Propane Gas.

He states that it is really hot down there but that he likes it fine.

Roger John Nissen, age 91, of Carroll passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning.

Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Organist for the service will be Jan Hoff. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Jon Crane, Seth Bruggeman, Mark Kerwood, John Olberding, Bobby Nissen, and Steven Bornhoft. Honorary casket bearers will be Arlo "Pappy" Jochims, Jim Moore, Tom Reiter, Doug Haberl, Randy Saunders, Dr. Greg Perkins, and Ralph Lampman. Born on June 4, 1925, on his family's farm west of Manning, Iowa, he was the son of George William and Hilda (Opperman) Nissen. Roger was baptized on July 19, 1925, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 20, 1941, both at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He attended country school as a boy and graduated from Manning High School in 1943. Roger enlisted in the United States Army following high school and was stationed in Florida. He returned to Manning and went to flight school, earning his pilot's license. Roger started the Nissen Poultry Service and Hatchery and operated it for several years. He was married to Alice Bornhoft on October 16, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Pastor Ansorge. The couple lived in Manning where he started Manning Propane. In 1963 Roger sold his company to Northern Propane and moved to Carroll to work for them. He worked for them for 25 years, retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, he worked for S & S Store in the receiving department for several years and later sold Old American Life Insurance and worked as a greeter at Walmart. While living in Manning, Roger was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he held many offices. He also served on the Manning Fire Department for many years. After moving to Carroll, he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the board of elders. Roger and Alice enjoyed camping and belonged to the Royal Rovers Camping Club. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, collecting all types of ornamental chickens, and spending time with his family.

Roger is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Crane and her husband Marshall of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a son, David John Nissen and his wife Caroline TanCreti of Ft. Collins, Colorado; four grandchildren: Jon Crane and his wife, Gwen of Lake Ozark, Missouri, Seth Bruggeman and his wife, Mindy of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Jennifer Crane of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Irene Nissen and her husband, Mark Kerwood of Ft. Collins, Colorado; seven great grandchildren: Olivia, Eli, Marcus, Jack, Molly, Holden, Harrison, and one on the way in September; a sister, Rita Saunders of Manning; a sister-in-law Lois Hansen; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Alice.
