The Manning Field Service Chapter was formed March 15, 1960. Members composed of various organizations from the community, elected Ray Pratt to serve as the first president. Other officers serving were Dr. Chandler, Bonita Hagedorn, Mildred Joens, Vera Fischer and Fredda Hinz. The William Ohde family was chosen to be the first host family.

In 1978 the name of the organization was changed to AFS International, because of a change made in the policy which included a domestic exchange program within our own country.

In 1976 David Opperman became the chapter's first American Abroad summer student and visited Iceland.

In 1977 Brenda Jules visited Costa Rica and Doris Rohe visited Germany.

In 1978-79 Valerie Opperman was accepted as the first winter student on the abroad program and she spent the year in New Zealand.

Rhonda Opperman lived a year in Australia.

The summer of 1979 Teresa Sextro went to Hamburg, New York, and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Joens were hosts to Karen Wilson from Decatur, III.

Many organizations in the community make up the fund to finance the student program. In 1976 the local chapter sponsored a Town and Country talent show to raise money to help carry on this program. It was so well received that it was decided to have the show once every two years. To date our community has had the privilege of knowing 21 students from foreign countries.
