Laid to Rest Monday
It is with regret and sorrow that the Monitor is called upon to chronicle the death of Mr. William Wunder. His death occurred Friday morning, December 27, at 9:15 o'clock at his home in South Manning. Mr. Wunder had been ill for nearly two weeks with pneumonia and pleurisy from which he recovered nicely. On Christmas day he was able to enjoy his dinner with his family Resting when necessary and continuing on his way to complete recovery, he felt real well Friday morning and had morning meal at the table. Shortly before his expiration he complained about a pain in his side near his heart. The family physician was called immediately, but Mr. Wunder fainted away and slumbered into eternity before aid was available. His age was 55 years and 25 days at the time of his death.
William Wunder was born December 2nd, 1874, in Scott County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and spent his youthful days. In February, 1898 he was united in marriage to Miss Alvina Koberg of Durant, Iowa, to which union one daughter, Alvina, Mrs. Luetje was born. In giving life to a new being as God intended her to do, she gave her own and passed away on January 2nd, 1899, in the midst of blooming years. But such are the ways and the will of God.
The deceased entered into second marriage with Miss Louise Sievers on February 22nd, 1900. This union was blessed with three children, one son and two daughters. The son, Edwin passed away on November 1925. The two daughters, Edna Mrs. Harlan Philips and Erna, Mrs. Herbert Sander, mourn the loss of the father and husband besides the bereaved wife and mother. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Edwin Edward Wunder, Doris Louise Philips and Billy Olyn Sander, and three brothers, Louie, Fred and Charles, and two sisters, Mrs. John Rathjen and Emelie Keppy. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
After his first marriage, Mr. Wunder came with his wife to Carroll County and lived on the John Rathjan farm on the county line a mile east and miles north of Manning, where his first wife passed away. After living there a number of years he later purchased the Henry Sievers farm in Crawford County where they resided until in the spring of 1925 when they retired front active far life and moved to their present home.
The funeral services were held Monday, December 30 at 2 p.m. from the M.E. Church, the Reverend Doyl assisted by the Reverend Harry Costs of Woodbine, officiating. The choir of the church rendered beautiful music and many of his numberless friends attended the services to their esteem and respect to their beloved friend. The flowers were numerous and beautiful and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.
As pallbearers acted: F.W. Pruter, J.W. Asmus, W.E. Sander, J.E. Reetz, G.J. Ohde, and Herman Rowedder.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were Herman Wunder of Donahue, Iowa, Louie Wunder of Dixon, Iowa, and Mrs. Alvina Luetje of Durant, Iowa.
Fred Wunder of Humboldt, Iowa, and Henry Sievers of Westside, Iowa, Carl Haman, Leona Haman, John Martens and Mrs. Bertha Harmsen, all of Persia, Iowa.
