William Wilfong

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Ohde Funeral Home for William Harvey Wilfong, born November 16, 1866, in Montour, Iowa, who died Wednesday, January 4, 1947, at his home in Manilla following a short critical illness. The Rev. Charles Henderson of Fontanelle conducted rites, with burial in Manilla Cemetery.

A native of Montour, Mr. Wilfong had lived in the Manning vicinity most of his life. He was married to Margaret Ann Dales on August 16, 1889, and they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last year.

Surviving are his widow and two sons John of Manilla and Guy Wilfong of Omaha; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Flint and Dolpha Wilfong, both of Manilla; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

William Wilfong passed away at his home in Manilla, January 1, 1947, at the age of 80 years, 1 month, and 14 days.

While he had not been well for some time his condition did not become critical until two days before his passing and his death was much of a shock to the community.

William Harvey Wilfong was born at Montour, Iowa, in Tama County, November 18, 1866, the youngest son of Martin and Maria Wilfong, one of a family of ten children, who all have preceded him in, death.

The Wilfong family came by covered wagon to Shelby County in the early 1870s and there he spent most of his life on a farm near Botna. On August 16, 1889, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Dales. Five children came to gladden their home, one dying in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his wife and four children, namely, Mrs. Robert Flint, (Leefay), Dolpha, Johnny, all of Manilla, and Guy of Omaha, Nebraska. There are also seven grandchildren, Dorothy and Margaret Flint, Mrs. Betty Wilfong Conway, Ronnie Lee Wilfong, JoAnne, Carol, and Janice Wilfong and one great-grandchild, Connie Clara Conway.

While living in the vicinity of Botna, he united with the Church of the Nazarene and remained in this faith until he joined the Church Triumphant.

He moved to his home in Manilla in January, 1940. At this time his sight began to fail and for the past six years, he was totally deprived of his sight.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilfong were married 57 years August 16, 1946.

Funeral services were conducted at the Ohde Funeral home in Manning Saturday, January 4, with the Rev. Charles Henderson of Fontanelle, an old friend of the family, in charge, assisted by Rev. Latta of Manilla. Pallbearers were Thomas Signal, Frank Means, Tom Rowan, Mon Petersen, Ross Penniston, and John Lewis.
