Note: William was known as "Preacher Martens" in the area and signed his name F.W. Martens on many baptismal documents, and his tombstone has the first and middle names reversed, but is the same person.

Death of Fredrick Wilhelm Martens
It was quite a shock to the citizens of Manning and vicinity last Thursday morning when word was received that Rev. Martens had passed away the evening before. He had been complaining for some time but had been up and about his duties as usual. Wednesday afternoon prior to his death he had united a couple in marriage. Dropsy of the heart seemed to be the immediate cause of death. Mr. Martens has resided on his farm six miles northwest of Manning for about twenty-five years and is well known in this community and has friends by the score who regret his loss more than they can tell. He had been a member of the German Lutheran Church for many years and was trying to lead a religious life. He has officiated at funerals of his neighbors and friends for many years past and was always ready and willing to respond to any call of need. He was a good, kind neighbor and will be greatly missed by everyone.

Fredrick Wilhelm Martens was born April 23, 1848, at Holstein, Germany, and died October 27th, 1904. He came to America when a young man and was married to Margaretha Ewoldt October 10,1873, at Moline, Illinois, and moved to Clinton County where they resided six years. From there they moved to Crawford County where they have resided since. The deceased leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss, Henry, Gustave, Emilie, Willie, Emil, Kathrina, and Harry. The funeral was held at the home last Sunday afternoon. Berthold Kraus, editor of the Manning Herold, officiating, and the remains were interred in the Manning Cemetery, followed by a long concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives.
