Wilbur Herman, son of Johannes and Clara (Kruse) Schroeder, was born March 9, 1912, at the family home, Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools and then Manning High School. After he completed his schooling he worked on the family farm and for the Denison area Rural Electric Association.

On January 21, 1941, Wilbur was united in marriage with Gertrude Frank at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Two children were born to this union. The family made their home on a farm south of Arcadia and later bought a farm northeast of Arcadia. He retired from farming in 1976 when they moved into their new home in Westside. During his retirement years, Wilbur had a large garden and supplied most of the town with fresh produce. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling. He was a member of the United Church in Westside.

When Wilbur’s health began to fail he entered the nursing home, first in Denison and then the Manilla Manor. He died on Thursday, February 10, 2000, at the Manilla Manor, Manilla, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 1 day.

He is preceded in death by his wife Gertrude in 1996; his parents; two brothers Vernon Schroeder and Merlin Schroeder; a sister Bernice Justice; and a grandson Justin Heitmann.

Wilbur is survived by a daughter Clarice and husband Darwin Rosener of Spirit Lake; son Robert Schroeder and wife Rachelle of Tabor; four grandchildren: Mark Rosener and wife Michelle; Scot Rosener and wife Sabra; Eric Schroeder; and Nathan Heitmann; four great-grandchildren: Maxwell; Mia; Jacob; and Sydney Rosener; two sisters Gertrude Christensen of Stanton, CA, and Phyllis and husband Wayne Jans of Westside, who showed special loving care to Wilbur over the years; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
