WALTER T. SONKSEN
Funeral services for Walter T. Sonksen were held Monday, March 25, 1985, at
2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning with Pastor Paul Krumm
officiating. Dorothy Kusel was organist with the congregation singing.
Interment was held in Manning City Cemetery with Lyle Hansen, Gale
Rundell, George Pfoltner, Henry Sonksen, Labert "Bud"
Stahl, and David Rundell as casketbearers.
Walter, son of John and Minnie (Steen) Sonksen, was born April 3, 1909, in Audubon County, Iowa. He was baptized on June 6, 1909, in the Lutheran Church and was confirmed there on May 25, 1924. Walter was graduated from Manning High School in 1928. After graduation he worked for four years with William Ohde, Sr. as an undertaker and helped in the Ohde Furniture Store. During this time he also served in the Manning Volunteer Fire Department. After leaving Manning he was the owner of a Coast to Coast store in Knoxville, Iowa, later moving to Panora, Iowa, where he owned and operated a Variety Store. He then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he worked and had responsible positions with major companies.
Due to failing health he moved back to the Terrace Apartments in Manning on April 9, 1983. On June 1, 1983, he entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home where he passed away on March 22, 1985, at the age of 75 years, 11 months, and 19 days.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by the following sisters and brothers: Melinda Bornhoft of Manning; Arnold Sonksen and his wife, Gladys, of Harlan; Joe Sonksen and his wife, Edna, of Manning; and Velma Gunter of Miami, Florida; nieces, other relatives and friends.
Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.
