WALTER SAMUEL NEWELL

Funeral services for Walter Samuel Newell, 66, Audubon, Iowa, were held Tuesday afternoon, June 20, 1972, at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, with Rev. Andrew Hofer, Presbyterian minister from Audubon, officiating. Milton Barry, Irwin, was soloist and Mrs. Ruth Anne Barry, Irwin, organist. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery with Edwin Kuchel, Albert Umland, Roland Murray, Walter Murray, Roy Heiman, and Raymond Schuldt as honorary pallbearers; Robert Murray, Walter Murray, Larry Hulsebus, Russell Murray, Leroy Newell, and James Murray as active pallbearers.

Walter Samuel, son of Samuel and Mary (Paulsen) Newell, was born January 3, 1906, in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He attended the Oak Lawn rural school near his home and was united in marriage with Velma Murray on August 28, 1928, at Adel, Iowa. This union was blessed with one son and one daughter. They farmed north of Manilla until 1944 when they moved to a farm near Irwin for one year. They then returned to farm near Manilla until moving to a farm in Audubon County in 1958. They have lived in their present home southwest of Audubon for the past 8 years.
Walter was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Audubon.

He passed away early on Sunday morning, June 18, 1972, at his home at the age of 66 years, 5 months, and 15 days.

He was preceded in death by a son, Donald "Bub" Newell.

He is survived by his wife, Velma; daughter, Shirley, Mrs. Kenneth Pedersen, Irwin; four grandchildren: Deborah, Mrs. Ken Kaul, Davenport, Iowa; Betty and Mary Ellen Pedersen, Irwin and Donald Newell, Jr., Lakewood, California; one brother, Harry Newell, Gray; two sisters, Mina, Mrs. William Murray, Audubon, and Pearl, Mrs. Walter Newman, Moorpark, California; as well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
