WALTER HENRY MARTENS
Walter Henry Martens, 72, of Manning, died early Tuesday, July 31, 1979, at Manning General Hospital. He had been in ill health for the past year.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 2, at Zion Lutheran Church here with the pastor, Pastor Edward F. Heinicke, officiating. Mrs. Dorothy Kusel was organist. Casketbearers were August Mundt, Ray Vetter, Fred Nulle, Robert Hinners, Linus Heithoff, and Amos Lohmeier. Burial, under direction of the Ohde Funeral Home of Manning, was in the Manning Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters: Mrs. Larry (Lorraine) Slechta, Denison, and Sherrill Heller, Kimballton; a son, Dean Martens and his wife, Betty, Des Moines; six grandsons, a sister Mrs. Lydia Weideman, Sac City, and a brother Willis Hyattsville, Maryland. He was preceded by his parents and a brother Ray.

Mr. Martens was born March 20, 1907, hear Manning, a son of John and Adelia (Schumann) Martens. He attended rural and Manning schools. He farmed with his father until his marriage to Amanda Grau April 20, 1934, at Denison, when they moved to town. He worked for M.J.M. and the Stahl Construction Company. For the past several years he had been semi-retired, but worked in the summers for the Garst Company of Coon Rapids.


Walter Martens is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
