Rites Held For Waldo Puck, 15, Accident Victim
Waldo Puck, 15-year-old Manning high school sophomore, was killed in a tractor accident on his father's farm south of Manning on Thursday, May 20, 1943.
His body was found in the field near his tractor by his parents when he failed to meet them for his mid-morning lunch shortly after 10 a. m. and they started a search for him.
The lad and his father were each operating tractors some distance apart in the fields, the boy pulling a drag harrow behind his tractor. It is believed that the harrow became stuck and that he got off the tractor to fix it. Some part of the harrow apparently struck his head, causing his death. There were no marks on his body to indicate that he had been run over or dragged by the machinery, a physician said.
Waldo was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Puck. He was an ambitious and conscientious lad who possessed a pleasing personality that won him many friends both young and old in his comparatively short life. A willing and obedient boy, he was a great help to his parents. He was a lover of the out-of-doors and was greatly interested and spent much time with many, various pets. In addition to his parents he is survived by his grandfather, E.J. Puck of Manning and a number of uncles, aunts and cousins.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, May 23, at two o'clock at the Ohde Funeral Home. Rev. David G. MacDougall of the Methodist Church was in charge of the services. Clifford M. Johnson was the vocal soloist. The FFA Boys attended in a group. Burial was in the Manning cemetery.
Future Farmers of America, his classmates at Manning High, served as casket bearers. They were Earl Fischer, Lyle Jones, Lester Joens, Orrin Welch, William Hoffman and Marvin Bogatzke. The sophomore class, of which he was a member, attended in a body.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Julius Puck Puck, Emil Puck; Yvonne and Donna, Mrs. George Harke, Mr. and Mrs. Lurrain Puck of Mankato, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Lou Puck, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Meyers and daughter Shirley, Springfield, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Julius Wiese, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wiese, Lake Park, Ia., Mrs. John Bessman and Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Joens of Shelby, Mrs. Ed.
