Virtus A. Martens
Funeral services for Virtus A. Martens were held Wednesday, October 9, 1991, at 10:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Pastor Robert Riggert of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning officiated the service. Interment was held in the Arcadia Cemetery.

Virtus, son of Emil and Malinda (Mundt) Martens, was born July 31, 1917, on a farm near Manning, Iowa. He attended rural schools and one year of high school in Manning, quitting after his freshman year to help his dad on the farm.

On June 22, 1938, Virtus was united in marriage with Evelyn Witt. They farmed near Westside, then south of Manning, and finally settled on Virtus' home farm north of Manning. During these years Virtus served as township clerk and worked for the ASC farm program where he assisted in drawing maps. Virtus and his wife moved to Manning October 26, 1970; for 10 years Virtus was employed by the City of Manning.

Virtus died suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday evening, October 5, 1991, at the Manning General Hospital at the age of 74 years, 2 months, and 4 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his step-mother, Anna Joens; by two sisters, Irene Meggers and Dorothy Schrum; by three brothers, Clarence Martens, Earl Martens during World War II, and Edwin in infancy; and by a grandson, Michael Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Manning; children: Neva and her husband, Ken Kopaska, of Des Moines; Joan Lake, of Austin, Texas; Dennis Martens, of Glenwood; and Kerry Martens and his wife, Molly, of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Virtus was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
