Virgil Reid
Virgil Louis, son of Virgil W. and Tina (Olsen) Reid, was born in
Council Bluffs, Iowa, on May 27, 1926. He lived with his family in Council Bluffs and the
Manilla and Irwin areas, and attended school in Harlan. He worked for Pottawattamie County
before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1952. Virgil attained the rank of Corporal
and served for two years at Camp Pendleton as a shooting range instructor and prison guard.
On September 9, 1962, Virgil was united in marriage with Shirley Ohrt at the First
Presbyterian Church in Manning. Two sons were born to this union. Virgil worked with his
father selling feed in Manilla, and then worked in maintenance for the Manning School for
25 years until his retirement. After retiring, Virgil worked at the Manning Ag Center. In his
spare time he completed many woodworking projects for his family. Virgil enjoyed fishing
in Canada with his sons and taking care of his grandchildren. He was a member of the
Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and the First Presbyterian Church in Manning.
Virgil was fighting cancer and a recent stroke when he became a resident of the Manning
Plaza Nursing Home in Manning earlier this month. He died there on Thursday, March 16,
2006, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 17 days. Preceding Virgil in death are his
parents, sister Leoma Holmes and grandson Jackson Reid. He is survived by wife Shirley
