Vila Mae, daughter of Ben and Minnie (Copp) Cafourek, was born April 12, 1923 at Myrtle, Minnesota. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then worked as a hired girl for neighbors and helped her father on the farm.

On December 5, 1945, Vila was united in marriage with Wilmer W. Ranniger in Hayward, Minnesota. Four children were born to this union. The couple farmed northwest of Manning, Iowa until 1974 when they moved into Manning. Vila then worked for Nelson Manufacturing for six years. After Wilmer passed away in 2003, Vila remained in their home until settling at Manning Senior Living in 2016.

Vila was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Happy Hour Club. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2019, Vila died at Accura Health Care (formerly Plaza) in Manning, Iowa, after experiencing a rapid decline in health in the beginning of May. She was 96 years, 1 month, and 24 days of age.

Vila was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wilmer Ranniger; daughter Janet Mitchell; granddaughter Wendy Mitchell; a brother Rudy Cafourek and a sister Gladys Schieven.

She is survived by two daughters: Joan Scalzo and husband Joe of Omaha, Nebraska; and Joyce Simon and John Maiella of Chicago, Illinois; a son Russ Ranniger and wife Cindy of Manning; a son-in-law Rob Mitchell and wife Linda of Council Bluffs; nine grandchildren: Andrea Yi, Lisa Malmstrom, Tim Simon, Carrie Dalton, Jacki Nusbaum, Jessica Sellner, Ann Feller, Bob Mitchell, and Nicki Mitchell; sixteen great-grandchildren; a sister Grace Richardson of Rochester, Minnesota; and a sister-in-law Lucille Ranniger of Manning; other relatives and friends.
