Mass of the Christian burial for Vernon P. Tiefenthaler was celebrated this morning, July 10, at St. Augustine Church in Halbur.
Mr. Tiefenthaler, 79, of Halbur, died Friday, July 7, 1989, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Burial was at St. Augustine Cemetery.
The Rev. Eugene Ceperley celebrated the Mass.
Lector at the Mass was Kevin Wittrock. Mass servers were Keith and Kent Pottebaum. Gift bearers were Susie Beach, Liz Beach, Ross Muhlbauer, and Kate Muhlbauer.
Casket bearers were Walt Wittrock, Arden Hinners, Leon Rotert, Joe Judge, Steve Schrum, and Skip Schrum.
Twit Funeral Home in Carroll handled arrangements.
Born October 17, 1909, in Halbur, Mr. Tiefenthaler was a son of Anton and Elizabeth (Drees) Tiefenthaler. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1928. He was a technical sergeant in the 573rd Army Postal Unit, serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre from February 4, 1943, to November 21, 1945.
On March 26, 1941, he was married to Helen Schrum at Remsen by the Rev. Leander Friedman.
He worked in the family business, Eischeid and Tiefenthaler General Store in Halbur. He was a postal clerk and served as Halbur postmaster from 1965 to 1979.
He was a member of Holy Name, St. Augustine Parish and American Legion Ehlers Post 694 of Arcadia. He was well-known in Halbur and surrounding communities as a baseball pitcher.
Mr. Tiefenthaler is survived by his wife, Helen, of Halbur; two daughters, Carol Beach of Omaha, Nebraska, and Anne Muhlbauer and her husband, Neil, of Manning; one son, John Tiefenthaler of Tulsa; Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Judge of Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray; and two sisters, Olga and Alma, in infancy.
