Todd A. Yockey, 16, of Vail, died Saturday, September 12, 1987, of injuries sustained in a one-car accident north of Vail. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church at Arcadia with Rev. Jack Dahl officiating.
Burial was in the Manning Cemetery under direction of Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.
Todd was born November 8, 1970, at Denison. He attended Ar-We-Va Community Schools at Westside where he was active in many school and community activities, including membership in Scout Troop 121. He had completed requirements for the Eagle Scout award and an installation ceremony was planned in November to present Todd with the award.
Last summer Todd taught summer Bible school at his church as his community service project for Scouts. A member of the Ar-We-Va high school junior class, Todd participated in basketball, track, drama and chorus. He was active in Lutheran Youth Fellowship and enjoyed archery, building models and fishing. More than 130 Ar-We-Va students from high school and junior high attended the funeral, an indication of Todd's popularity, said high school principal, David Wyckoff.
An honor roll student, Todd was employed last summer for the city of Vail, said Wyckoff, and was going to be employed part-time during the school year at the high school. "He was our number one candidate for the job", said Wyckoff. "He was a good, all around student" said Ar-We-Va superintendent, Robert Nielsen. "He was the kind of guy that you liked having around. We're going to miss him. He said hello to you every morning and he always had a smile for you. You couldn't find a more likeable young man." Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Lyle and Virginia (Backhaus) Donnelson of Vail; his father and stepmother, Gary and Judy Yockey of Washta; two sisters, >Ranae Yockey of West Des Moines, and Mrs. Scott (Rhonda) Anderson of Coralville; two half-brothers, Terry A. Yockey and Gerald Christopher Yockey, both of Washta; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Backhaus of Denison, and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Yockey of Anthon.
