Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, Iowa
Shirley Ann, daughter of Orla and Edna (Ramsey) Peters, was born September 15, 1926, on a farm two miles west of Manning in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural school Iowa No. 6 near her home through the eighth grade and then graduated from Manning High School in 1944. After graduation, she completed one year at Commercial Extension in Omaha, Nebraska. During World War II she worked in Jefferson at the Court House for the Government Ration Board.
On September 8, 1946, Shirley was united in marriage with Ronald Eugene "Gene" McCollum at the United Methodist Church in Manning. One son was born to this union. They farmed with Shirley's parents and continued after their deaths for a total of 44 years. Shirley also worked in the kitchen at Manning General Hospital from 1983 to 1991. The couple moved into Manning in 1990. After the death of her husband in 2007, Shirley remained in their home in Manning.
Shirley was an active member of the United Methodist Church where she was a member for over 70 years; United Methodist Women which she joined in 1950, serving all offices and Sunday School teacher. She always had a strong love for her church and church family. Shirley was very active in the community, including the VFW Auxiliary, Manning Regional Hospital Auxiliary, congregate meals, RSVP and Hausbarn volunteer group. While on the farm she was a member of the Tri-County Social Club and enjoyed neighborhood get-togethers on holidays and birthdays. Shirley was on a bowling team for 35 years. It was also important to Shirley that everyone knows that she had her fritter from Deb's Corner Café before Christmas this year. Above all, she enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.
When Shirley's health began to fail, she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home where she died January 2, 2017, at the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 18 days. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Shirley is survived by her son Steven McCollum (Linda Merk-McCollum) of Carroll; three grandchildren Chad Eugene McCollum (fiancee Renae) of North Bend, Nebraska, Jeramy McCollum of Council Bluffs, and Mandy Lawler (Bill) of Carroll; three great-grandchildren Jacob McCollum and Madison and Garrett Lawler; other relatives and friends.
