Walter Edward Schramm was born on a farm in Denison Township, Crawford County, Iowa, July 22, 1918, the son of Rudolph and Emma Marie Moeller Schramm. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison August 13, 1918, and confirmed in his Christian faith there May 19, 1940. Walter spent his early years on the farm and attended the rural schools before being graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1936.
Following high school and prior to the service he operated a dairy farm with his father. During World War II, from September 22, 1942 until his discharge, October 29, 1945, Walter served his country in the United States Navy in the South Pacific. Following the service he returned to Denison where he began his career with the Denison Municipal Utilities in 1946.
On June 6, 1948, Walter was united in marriage with Shirley Ehrichs at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Their union was blessed with four children, Rick, Kim, Becky and Scott. They made their home in Denison where Walter continued his employment with the Utilities until he retired after over 37 years with them July 1, 1983. For three years in conjunction with his utility work he was employed part time in maintenance at World Wide Meats in Denison.
Walter spent his retirement years in Denison where he enjoyed his hobbies of hunting, fishing, gardening and being a handyman for family members and friends. Throughout his life he was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison where he was a member and past president of the Wedding Ring Club now known as the Fellowship Club, served as a greeter and regularly attended the adult bible class. Other memberships he enjoyed include Association For Retarded Citizens-Crawford, American Legion Post 8, Denison and was a former member of the Ninus L. Hunt V.F. W. Post 2504 in Denison.
Walter died Thursday afternoon, April 28, 1994, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa following a three year struggle with cancer. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 75 years, 9 months and 6 days. Walter was preceded in death by his parents.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 45 years, Shirley Schramm of Denison, four children, Rick Schramm and his wife, Theresa of Denison, Kim Schramm and his wife, Ronda of Woodbine, Iowa, Becky Schramm and special friend, Mike Finn of Omaha, Nebraska, and Scott Schramm at home in Denison, four grandchildren, Justin Hinners of Denison and Heather, Bethany and Cami Schramm of Woodbine, Iowa, three sisters, Elizabeth Lownes, Ruth Thompson and Sandra and her husband, Curtis Stender all of Denison, one brother, Wilbert Schramm and his wife Bonnie of Winter Haven, Florida, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn Ehrichs and wife Dorothy of Corvallis, Oregon, Dorothy Kusel of Manning, Iowa and Pat Ehrichs Williams and husband Del of Nutrioso, Arizona. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
