Bertha Fay, daughter of Ernest and Ida Ann Elwell Armstrong, was born July 7, 1914, at Manilla, Iowa. She attended Manilla schools and graduated from Manilla High School in 1932.

On February 3, 1932, Bertha was united in marriage with Herman Ruhde in Blair, NE. They lived in Manning where they raised their three children. Bertha was a homemaker and also worked in food service for the Manning School System for 21 years. For 7 1/2 years before her retirement in 1984, Bertha worked as site manager for Pioneer Nutrition Project (Congregate Meals). Her husband died in 1974.

Bertha was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service (now UMW) and had served in many offices including president. She was also a charter member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and serving her church. Above all she enjoyed her family.

On January 4, 1991, after suffering complications from a stroke, Bertha became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Friday, May 28, 1999, at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 21 days.

Besides her parents and husband, Bertha is preceded in death by a son-in-law Richard Mincey; grandson Danny Phelps, and granddaughter Crystal Butler.

She is survived by three children: Beverly and her husband Donald Butler of Creston; Shirley and her husband Gene Phelps of Bayard; and Craig Ruhde and his wife Karyl of Waukee; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Amos Armstrong and his wife Charlyne of Warrensburg, MO; sister Minnie and her husband Bob Christiansen of Scottsdale, AZ; two sisters-in-law Bernice Potter of Manning and Ruth Armstrong of West Point, Nebraska, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
