Obituary of Rudolph Stuedemann of Clinton

Through the courtesy of a relative giving us the particulars, we are able to bring the following brief obituary of Mr. Rudolph Stuedemann of Clinton, Iowa.

Mr. Studemann and family were residents of the Manning vicinity for fourteen years, during which time they gained a host of friends who sympathize with the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.

Rudolph C. Stuedemann was born in the province of Preussen, Germany, November 21, 1856. He came with his parents to America in 1861, which was a long and tiresome journey. They came as far west as Fulton, Illinois, by rail, where the railroads ended, crossing the Mississippi River by ferry, continuing the journey by ox team to Lyons, Iowa, settling on a farm and through hard work and frugality the father was able to purchase a team of horses for $500.00. These were the pleasures of pioneer life, driving a splendid team of horses hitched to a good lumber wagon.

On this old home place, Mr. Stuedemann grew to manhood, enjoyed his youthful days, received his education and toiled on his father's farm.

On April 7th, 1881, he joined hands with Miss Dorothy Claussen in the holy bonds of wedlock, to which union seven children were born, of which two sons, John and Harry, preceded the father in death. Those surviving besides the bereaved widow are the following children: Emil Stuedemann of Bryant, Iowa; Mrs. Martha Oppermann of Manning, Iowa; Dick Stuedemann of Flandreau, South Dakota; Miss Helen Stuedemann, Mrs. Elsie McIntyre of Los Angeles, California; also two grandchildren, Dorothy Stuedemann of Bryant, Iowa, and Ralph Stuedemann of Flandreau, South Dakota. Many other relatives and a host of friends in every community where they resided.

Residing in Clinton County on the farm for a number of years, they came to Carroll County in 1898 and lived on the Martens farm now occupied by John N. Martens, four miles north of Manning, and residing in the neighborhood of Manning for fourteen years, after which they moved back to Clinton County. Residing on the farm there for a number of years, then retiring from active farm life and moving to Clinton, Iowa, where they resided on Fifth Avenue for five years, from 1914 to 1919, when they moved to Los Angeles, California. Enjoying the land of sunshine for ten years, they moved back to Clinton County, Iowa in 1929, to the old home place, where he passed away at the home of his son, Emil, on Tuesday, April 7th, at the age of 74 years, 4 months, and 14 days.

As a strange coincidence as it seems, his death occurred on the date when he came to the home place at the age of about five years, and the morning of his golden wedding anniversary.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 11, 1931, at 2 o'clock in the home of his son, Emil Stuedemann, near Bryant, the Reverend Sinder, pastor of the community church, officiating. Interment was made in the Center Grove Cemetery. Many were the friends who came to pay the last tribute to their beloved departed neighbor and friend.
