Ruby Zabokrtsky
Funeral services for Ruby Kuhl Zabokrtsky were held at 10:30 a.m. on July 18,
2003 at Gerdes-Meyer Chapel, Fairbury, Nebraska. Reverend Bill Jardine officiated. Vocal
music was by Mary Cassell, accompanied by Lorene Staley, both longtime family friends.
Interment was in the Steele City Cemetery, Steele City, Nebraska, with grandsons, Greg
Zabokrtsky, Larry Hughes, Wade Baldwin, Dusty Zabokrtsky, Jerry W. Zabokrtsky, Cory
Zabokrtsky, Travis Zabokrtsky, Brice Sawin and Justin Zabokrtsky as casketbearers. The
rest of the grandchildren were honorary casketbearers.
Ruby Violet Kuhl Zabokrtsky, 87, the only child of Hugo and Maggie (Wegner) Kuhl, was born August 27, 1915, in Manning, Iowa, and died July 14, 2003, at Bryan LGH West Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. As a child she was baptized in the Presbyterian Church. During her early grade school days the family moved to Cheyenne County, Nebraska and lived in the Lodgeple and Sunol communities. She graduated from Sunol High School in 1933 as valedictorian of her class.
Ruby and Louis Pearl Zabokrtsky were married at Kimball, Nebraska on February 2, 1935, and were the parents of fifteen children. They moved to Washington County, Kansas, and lived in the Enosdale community where they operated the Enosdale Store with Louis's brother and wife, Emil and Flora Porter Zabokrtsky.
Later Louis, Ruby and family lived on farms in the Diamond Center and Hollenberg communities in Washington County before moving to a farm between Steele City and Endicott, Nebraska in December of 1948. They continued to farm for a number of years until Louis began work in construction.
Ruby enjoyed sewing, gardening, and following her children's and grandchildren's activities in 4-H and horse shows.
She served on the Steele City School Board and was a former member of the Pythian Sisters of Steele City. In later years she enjoyed driving to Steele City and Endicott for coffee and "conversation". She was an avid sports fan, especially a Cornhusker football fan. By her family she was affectionately known as "Big Rube", "Ruby Doo", "Big Cat", and "Stub".
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents Hugo and Maggie Wegner Kuhl, in-laws Charley Y. Zabokrtsky and Anna Caroline Jenik Zabokrtsky, husband Louis P. Zabokrtsky on October 1, 1977, son Larry Kent Zabokrtsky on January 15, 1940, grandson Ryal L. Hughes of February 13, 1994 and son-in-law Edwin L. Highes on February 7, 1996.
She is survived by nine sons and five daughters: Bill and Jackie Zabokrtsky of Burlingame, Kansas; Mardee Hughes of Endicott, Nebraska, Mitch Zabokrtsky of Endicott, Nebraska; Judy Baldwin of Fairbury, Nebraska; Ted Zabokrtsky of Endicott, Nebraska; Joleen and Terry Grammer of Endicott, Nebraska; Butch and Particia Zabokrtsky of Endicott, Nebraska; Ronda and Bill Dickson of Clyde, Kansas; Steve and Christine Zabokrtsky of Endicott, Nebraska, Jack and Rebecca Zabokrtsky of Fairbury, Nebraska; Jeff Zabokrtsky of Endicott, Nebraska; Cindy and Larry Sawin of Washington, Kansas; Jerry Zabokrtsky of Steele City, Nebraska; Doug and Sandy Zabokrtsky of Endicott, Nebraska; twenty-eight grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
