Thelma Theresa, daughter of George and Cunnegunda Schechinger Henkelman, was born October 26, 1924, at Defiance, in Shelby County, Iowa. Thelma grew up in Defiance and attended St. Paul's Catholic School until 1939. After she finished her schooling she moved with her parents to Vail and helped them with the housework while they farmed.

Thelma and Lyle made their home in Manning. In 1965 Thelma started working for L.R. Nelsen's Manufacturing until the plant closed in 1982.
Thelma was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning, the Catholic Daughters, Rosary Society, and the Little Flower Prayer Club. In her spare time Thelma enjoyed ceramics, volunteering at the Manning Plaza, and spending time with her grandchildren.
In 1998 Thelma's health began to fail and she moved to Bergan Mercy Care Center in Omaha, NE, where she died Tuesday, September 28, 1999, reaching the age of 74 years, 11 months and 2 days.
