Robert Edwin, son of Harlan and Edna Louise (Wunder) Phillips, was born September 5, 1936, at his present home in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He attended country school in Hayes Township and graduated from Manning High School in 1954. Following graduation, he worked for Ocoma Foods in Carroll and Gruhn Hybrid Corn Company in Manilla.
On May 28, 1956, Robert was united in marriage with Audrey Leinen at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Four children were born to this union. Robert and Audrey made their home at his parents’ farm in Crawford County, where he farmed and was an agent for Carroll County Home Mutual Insurance, with whom he also served on the Board of Directors. He also did custom combining for area farmers.
Robert served on the Aspinwall Cooperative Auxiliary Board, was a trustee of the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein, and was a founding board member of the West Central Iowa Rural Water Association. He enjoyed restoring cars and tractors, camping, fishing, playing cards, watching sports, attending farm sales, traveling, tending his cow/calf herd at LPL, and attending and working at dances at the 5-Mile House. He enjoyed teasing his grandchildren whom he loved greatly. Known as "Dodge Boy" on the CB, Robert held a particular fondness for Ford tractors.
On Monday, March 6, 2000, Robert entered Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was treated for ADEM (a rare degenerative disease) from which he died upon his return to Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning on Sunday, March 26, 2000. He reached the age of 63 years, 6 months and 21 days.
Besides his parents, Robert is preceded in death by a son Todd in infancy, and two brothers-in-law Norman Gruhn and Larry Witt.
He is survived by his wife Audrey Phillips of Manning; three children: Becky and her husband Steve Zinke of Corning; Lynn Phillips and his wife Mary of Manning; Lisa and her husband Daryl Rohe of Manning; eight grandchildren: Jamy and Elizabeth Zinke; Kelly and Christine Phillips; Ryan, Rusty, Robbie and Ross Rohe; two step-grandchildren Stacie and Laura Bell; a step-great granddaughter Mallory Berg; a sister Doris Witt of Manilla; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
