Obituary of Reimer Witt

Reimer Witt, one of our oldest and esteemed citizens passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.A. Wiese, near Manning, during the night of August 30th, having reached the ripe old age of 85 years, 5 months, and 2 days.

Mr. Witt was born in Holstein Germany, March 28, 1841. On December 4, 1864, he was united in marriage to Marie Schultz of that place. Ten children were born to them, all of whom are living, except one son who died in infancy. In June 1883, the deceased came to America with his wife and children and located on a farm south of Arcadia where he remained until 1905. He then retired from farm life, moving to Arcadia where he lived until about two years ago. About five years ago his faithful companion of his life for 57 years was taken from his side by the hand of death. Since then it has been his desire to join her in the great beyond.

His health had been failing the past year and on Thursday of last week his ailment became serious. He passed away Monday night with all his children at his bedside.

He is survived by nine children, 4 sons, William of Manning, John and August of Arcadia and Gustave of Bonesteel, South Dakota; five daughters, Mrs. E.A. Wiese and Mrs. Jacob Lage of Manning, Iowa; Mrs. William Kracht of West Side; Mrs. L.D. Bruggeman of Laurel, Nebraska, and Mrs. J.H. Lage of Latimer, Iowa; also 51 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, one half-brother, Claus Michelson of Lyons, Iowa, and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church in Arcadia and interment made at the Arcadia Cemetery. The Reverend Walthers conducting the service.
