Raymond Dennis, the son of George J. and Anna R. Georgius Ohde, was born November 9, 1908 in Manning, Carroll County, Iowa. As a young boy, he lived near Aspinwall and attended country schools. Ray then worked on the family farm. After the family moved to a smaller farm and had more time on their hands, Ray and his brothers and sisters began to develop their musical talent. Ray ran the Harmony Boys Orchestra which later became Ray Ohde and His Orchestra. As well as Ray's family, several area musicians were members of this group, which was very popular throughout the 30s and 40s.
In 1936 Ray was united in marriage with Margaret Gruhn. Two children, Roger and Sally, were born to this union. Ray and Margaret made their home near Manilla and in Aspinwall. Ray worked with his father-in-law, August Gruhn, helping him plant his first hybrid seed cornfield in 1937. In 1940 Ray and Margaret moved into Manning. Ray eventually became General Manager of Gruhn Hybrid Seed Company of Manilla. Margaret died August 31, 1989. Ray retired in 1990 but continued to serve as president of the Board of Directors until his death on March 22, 1998. Ray died of heart failure at the Mill-Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny, reaching the age of 89 years, 4 months and 13 days.
Besides his wife and parents, Ray was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sally; a sister, Viola Martens; and three brothers: Oscar (in infancy), Oliver and Melvin Ohde.
Ray is survived by a son, Roger Ohde, and his wife, Bernita, of Bondurant; three grandchildren: Michael Ohde and his wife, Julie, and their three children, Kaitlin, Ashten and Mathew, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; Karlyn Ohde, of Cedar Rapids; and Kevin Ohde of Des Moines; a sister, Jean Pfoltner of Manning; and two brothers: Wesley and Lester Ohde, both of Carroll; and by other relatives and friends.
