Ralph Low Zane

Died in Lake City, Iowa, Tuesday evening, May 14, 1901.

R.L. Zane, born October 31, 1854, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Zane, aged 48 years, 6 months, and 14 days, of diseased spleen.

R.L. Zane was born in Cass County, Michigan, coming to Calhoun County at the age ten years with his parents.

He was married in 1878 to Miss Jennie Guild. His loving wife and daughters Ada and Clara survive him.

Mr. Zane was a prominent Odd Fellow, a charter member and Secretary of C.H. Barnum Lodge B. of R. T.

He was in the employ of the Chicago & North Western Railway Company for about ten years. For some time he had been in the employ of W.E. Pfenoing's cigar factory as salesman, cashier and bookkeeper.

Though in very poor health for months his last illness was of very short duration, he having been out on the road selling goods during the week previous to his death.

The funeral service was held at the home on Friday at 11:30 conducted by Rev. E.E. Bennett of the Christian Church. The remains were taken to Manning on Friday afternoon for interment, a special coach having been provided by the Chicago & North Western Railway Company, for the free use of the funeral party, and where the final ceremony was conducted by Rev. Bennett, assisted by the Odd Fellows of Manning, Iowa, who were formerly associated with the deceased when he resided there. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Besides the many resident relatives and friends of the deceased in attendance at the funeral, there came from Colorado Springs the father, A.W. Zane, sister, Mrs. C.M. Smith; Mrs. E. Berry and Mrs. George Kepner, from Fort Dodge, and his brother James from Deadwood, South Dakota.

R.L. Zane was a good man and he will be greatly missed not only by his immediate family but by all his friends and acquaintances. $1200 insurance will be paid to the widow by the B. of R. T. society.

Lake City Odd Fellows attended the funeral in a body, as well as a large company of the B. of R.T.

The bearers were J.C. Stratton, J.W. McKelvie, Walter Cramer, William Nichols, John Hauser, and William W. Cretzler.

Accompanying the funeral train were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huff, Mr. and Mrs. Pfening, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bain, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sebern, Mrs. Lafe Morgan, Mrs. William Hughes, Mrs. S.W. Boyles, Mrs. Westveer, Misses Lou Bain Mertie Campbell and Inda Morgan, Messrs. Rodney Gabriel, Frank Gannon, Robert McClure, Fred Kinney, A.W. Russell, Henry Hauser, John Seivert, Warren Preston, William Bunting, Elmer Campbell, J.B. Smith, William Fulkerson, William Stanfield, John Brady, John A. Folkerts, D.E. Norris, Frank and George Swender, and others.
