Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ohde Funeral Home here, with the Rev. Carl Sinning officiating. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lyle (Dorothy) Arp, Manning, and Mrs. Lyle (Eleanor) Schrum, Des Moines; four grandchildren, and one half-brother, Ernest Dee Sutherland, Manning. Two brothers, Lial Carey and Robert Earle Sutherland preceded him in death.
Mr. Sutherland was born December 15, 1877, at Scotch Grove, Iowa, a son of Donald Wayne and Anna (Espy) Sutherland. After Anna's death in 1882, Donald Married Allie Bishop, and they had Ernest.
Donald is buried in the Manning Cemetery and Anna is buried in the Scotch Grove Cemetery, Jones County, Iowa.
R.G. came to Manning as a young boy with his parents. He graduated from Manning High School in 1893, and from Hopkinton Junior College, Hopkinton, Iowa.
His marriage to Gertrude Timmerman took place July 15, 1915. Since Mrs. Sutherland's death in 1940, he had lived in his own home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arp. He had been an invalid for 13 years.
Active in community affairs, Mr. Sutherland had been director of the light plant board here for a number of years, served on the school board, and was treasurer of the Presbyterian Church for many years. He was a charter member of the Manning-Manilla Golf and Country Club and had served as president. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, had belonged to the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, and was a member of Za-Ga-Zig Temple of the Shrine, Des Moines.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers,
Lyle and Robert Sutherland.
