Orin
, son of Austin and Martha Albright Pratt, was born July 19, 1889 at Armington, Illinois. After completing one year of high school he interrupted his education to assist his ill father on the family farm. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Roswell, New Mexico and began sheep ranching. At the age of 19, Orin returned to Illinois and obtained a position with the Western Electric Company at Hawthorne. He also furthered his education by completing several correspondence and night school courses over several years. While residing in the Chicago area, Orin held draftsman and engineering positions with Allis Chalmers and the Crane Company and was a partner in an automobile service and repair station.
After a serious bout with pneumonia, Orin left the Chicago area and entered into a farming partnership with his father and brother near whiting and later, Correctionville, Iowa. The partnership was dissolved in 1933, but Orin continued to farm at Correctionville and Cushing, Iowa until 1940. He then purchased the Coast-to-Coast hardware store in Manning and operated it with his son, Raymond, until his retirement in 1961 at the age of 72.
During his 50 year residence in Manning, Orin served as Secretary and President of the Chamber of Commerce, as Secretary of the Hospital Board, and on the City Council. He was a lifelong Mason and participated in the activities of the Masonic Lodge in Manning as long as he was physically able. He was a Past Master and Secretary of this lodge.
Orin was united in marriage with Mary Dvorak on July 19, 1913. She remained his beloved wife for 66 years until her death in August of 1979. Three children were born to this union: Raymond, Mildred, and John.
Orin died on Saturday morning, September 7, 1991 at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home at the age of 102 years, 1 month, and 19 days.
