Phyllis Ramsey

Funeral services for Phyllis (Laverty) Ramsey were held Tuesday, February 27, 1996, at 2:00 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, Iowa. Reverent Larry McAlpine of the United Methodist Church, Manning, Iowa, officiated the service with Helen Ohde as vocalist and Connie Siepker as organist. Interment was held in Manning City Cemetery, Manning, Iowa, with Jay Drees, Nick Drees, Chris Behrens, Rob Dammann, Chuck Ramsey, and Bob Laverty as casketbearers.

Phyllis, daughter of Harry and Ruth Miller Laverty, was born January 19, 1916, at Ida Grove, Iowa. She attended schools in both Ida Grove and Sioux City.

On October 11, 1932, Phyllis was united in marriage with Mayburn Ramsey in South Dakota. Three children were born to this union. They farmed two years near Manning, after which they operated Ramsey Transfer. Mayburn died on November 4, 1973. Phyllis and her son, Jim, continued to operate Ramsey Transfer. She retired in 1991.

Phyllis was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a 51 year member of the VFW Auxiliary. She and her husband thoroughly enjoyed golfing. Phyllis was an avid reader, especially of current events, and was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball fan.

Phyllis was diagnosed with cancer in November of 1995 and her health declined until her death on Saturday, February 24, 1996, at the Manning General Hospital. She was 80 years, 1 month, and 5 days of age.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara; a son, Jim, in 1991; two brothers, Charles Laverty and Kenneth Laverty; and a half-brother, Duane Waggener.

Survivors include her daughter, Pat, and her husband, Jim Drees, of Manning; the following grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jeff Drees and his wife, Gail, and their children, Nathan and James, of Austin, Texas; Jay Drees and his wife, Maureen, and their daughter, Danielle, of Manning; Nick Drees and his wife, Edith, and their children, Jonathan, Abigail, and Kaitlyn, of Ankeny; Bob Ramsey of Storm Lake; Kathy and her husband, Rob Dammann, and their children, Shelby, Caylee and Breana, of Manning; Chuck Ramsey and his wife, Barb, and their children, Elizabeth, Colton and Clay, of Manning; Jennifer and her husband, Chris Behrens, of Lawton; and Debra Ramsey of Storm Lake; and a daughter-in-law, Barb Ramsey of Manning. She is also survived by two sisters, Sara Barlow of New York and Betty and her husband, Burton Schrum, of Norton, Kansas; two half-brothers: John Waggener and his wife, Norma, of Estherville and Paul Waggener and his wife, Nellie, of Florida; a half-sister, Joan and her husband, Harry Belding, of Sioux City; a half-sister-in-law, Jackie Waggener, of California; a sister-in-law, Bernice Laverty, of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
