LAST RITES FOR PHILLIP ZERWAS
Funeral services for Mr. Phillip Zerwas, 76, prominent Manning business man, were held at Sacred Heart Church, Manning on Sept. 10, 1943. The Rev. Father J. A. Roder was in charge of the services. Present in the sanctuary were Rt. Rev. Msgr. P. T. Lynch and the Rev. Father R. J. Quinn of Carroll. Burial was in the Manning Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were Clyde Farrell, P. H. Jones, W. J. Martens, L. Policing, Bert Eich and E. D. Sutherland.
Mr. Zerwas passed away at his home Sept. 6, at 4:30 P. M., following a long illness. He was born May 1, 1867, in Germany.
He came to the United States in 1868, settling at Wheaton, Illinois.
In 1883 he came to Carroll County.
On May 10, 1904 he was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Brunnier in the Sacred Heart Church at Manning.
Mr. Zerwas was raised on a farm. He learned the meat trade in Carroll. He was also connected with the Green Bay Lumber Co., at Kirkman for ten years, and was manager of the Manning Telephone, Co., for the past forty years. He served as president of the Independent Telephone Association of Iowa and was a director at the time of his death.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and a charter member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
His survivors include his widow, six children, Eugene and Robert of Manning; LeRoy, U .S. Navy, Sister Mary Agnese, LaCrosse, Wis., Sister Mary Phillip, Carroll, Iowa; Francis, Naval Air Corps; six grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.

Dodge; Mr. Charles C. Deering, Des Moines; Mr. L. Meyers, Woodbine; Mr. Clyde Farrell, Carroll; Mr. C. Shear, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. P. Dinges, Carroll; Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Derner and daughter, Milford; Mr. Dave Peeker, Omaha; Mr. Loft Payne, Omaha; Mr. W. H. Daubendiek, West Bend; also a number of the Sisters and nurses of the Carroll hospital.
