Funeral services for Norma Jean Weems were held Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Daniel Vogel officiated the service with Carlys Stribe as organist. Interment was held in Manning Cemetery with Norma's grandchildren as casket bearers: Jason Weems, Heather Weems, Joshua Weems, Jed Weems, Jafe Weems, Jared Weems, Robby Luetje, Dylan Drake, Melanie Drake, Cameron Scott, and Cassandra Scott.
Norma Jean, daughter of Alfred and Jessie (Stribe) Nissen, was born January 6, 1926, in Manning, Iowa. She attended country schools there and graduated from Manning High School in 1944. Norma graduated from Normal Training School, then taught at country schools in the Manning area for several years.
On June 15, 1947, Norma was united in marriage with Eldis "Bud" Weems at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Six children were born to this union. The couple farmed several locations in the area before moving into Manning in 1963. In April of 1999, Norma moved into the Manning Plaza due to failing health. Bud died in May of 1999.
Norma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary for over 50 years. She was an avid bowler for many years, winning local and state tournaments. Norma enjoyed farm life, gardening, growing flowers and raising chickens. She and Bud especially enjoyed going to dances. Norma and bud were very devoted to Curtis.
On April 18, 2001, Norma died at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa following a lengthy illness. She was 75 years of age.
Besides her parents and husband, Norma was preceded in death by son Douglas Weems; grandchildren Jacob Weems and Sheri Luetje; and brother, Melvin Nissen.
Norma is survived by five children: Darrell Weems and wife, Della, of Adel; Myra and husband, Jim Luetje, of Westside; Nancy Drake of Omaha, Nebraska; Connie and husband, Gordon Scott, of Marietta, Georgia; and Curtis Weems of Manning; eleven grandchildren: Jason, Heather, Josh, Jed, Jafe, and Jared Weems; Robby Luetje; Dylan and Melanie Drake; and Cameron and Cassandra Scott; one great-grandchild Haylee Green Drake; brother Orlo Nissen of Manning; brothers and sisters-in-law: Edna Nissen and Lois Wegner of Manning; LaRae Heller of Carroll; Louie and Leona Hemminger of Elk Horn; Jack and Alta Borkowski of Manning; Opal Christensen of Humboldt; and by other relatives and friends.
