August, son of Henry and Mary (Hansen) Mundt, was born March 28, 1912, on a farm five miles north of Manning. He attended country schools.

On December 18, 1938, August was united in marriage with Eileen Rothfolk. Five children, Lenus, Paul, Janis, Lyle, and Larry were born to this union. A lifelong farmer, August made his home on the farm he bought from his father in 1956.

August died on Wednesday morning, March 9, 1988 at Manning General Hospital at the age of 75 years, 11 months, and 10 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by four sisters: Milda Copeland, Katherine Mundt, Anna Gehlsen, and an infant sister, Mary; and by one brother, Henry Mundt.

August is survived by his wife, Eileen, of Manning; and the following children: Lenus, of San Diego, California; Paul, of Jackson, Tennessee; Janis Nepple, of Spalding, Nebraska; Lyle, of Lynnwood, Washington; and Larry, of St. Louis, Missouri; by 17 grandchildren; by 2 great-grandchildren; by a brother, Louis Mundt, of Manning; and by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

All of his years were spent
tilling the land,
and giving his neighbors
a helping hand.
He loved us all in a quiet way,
with things he'd do
rather than words he'd say.
His gardens were
his pride and joy,
sharing the fruits of his labor
for others to enjoy.
He played his accordian
while tapping his feet,
while grandkids played drums
to maintain the beat.
Playing cards and visiting
with family and friends,
He enjoyed 'til the Lord
called his life to an end.
