Merlin Harry, son of Harry and Leona (Struve) Nulle, was born September 9, 1931, at Manning, Iowa. He grew up on the farm and attended rural schools. Merlin graduated from Manning High School with the Class of 1950. He stayed on the farm to help his father and also his uncle Fred Nulle.

On August 7, 1955, Merlin was united in marriage with Alta C. Justice at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Two sons were born to this union. They farmed south of Westside until 1967 when they moved to their farm north of Westside where they farmed for 40 years.

Merlin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. He and Alta were founding members of the Polka Dots. They enjoyed dancing, camping and traveling with friends. Merlin spent many enjoyable hours playing cards, Sheep Head and Rummy, in Arcadia. He enjoyed a lifetime of farming and riding his tractor, once going on a three state tractor ride with his brother Bill, Bill’s wife Sandy and Bill’s son Todd.

When Merlin’s health began to fail after surgery in 2006, he became a resident of Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. He died there on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the age of 77 years, 6 months and 1 day.
