Funeral services for Melvin Harold Wegner were held Monday, October 2, 1989, at 10:30 a.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Marshall Brown of First Presbyterian Church in Manning officiated the service with Connie Siepker as organist. Interment was in Manning City Cemetery with Elvin Sorensen, Junior Jensen, Sidney Christiansen, Gary Macke, Larry Kendle, and George Campbell as casketbearers.
Melvin, son of Emil and Margaret (Vehrs) Wegner, was born June 18, 1919, near Aspinwall, in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural schools near his home.
May 27, 1949, Melvin was united in marriage with Helen Rose Hinz. They lived for a short time on a farm near Manning, before moving to a farm west of Audubon. In 1969 they moved to Gray and in the fall of 1983 moved to the Friendship Village in Audubon. Melvin's wife, Helen, died May 20, 1984. Melvin continued to make his home at the Friendship Village, later moving to the Friendship Home. His health declined rapidly for the past six weeks and he died at the Friendship Home Friday, September 29, 1989, at the age of 70 years, 3 months, and 11 days.
Besides his wife, Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Paul Wegner.
Melvin is survived by the following children: Gary Wegner and his wife, Betty, of Audubon; Connie and her husband, Glenn Singsank, of Manning; Dale Wegner, of Audubon; Carolyn Sornson, of Nebraska City, Nebraska; twin sons, Leslie Wegner and his wife, Sheryl, of Templeton and Leroy Wegner and his wife, Karen, of Warrenburg, Missouri; Mary and her husband, Gary Weitl, of Templeton; and Randall Wegner and his wife, Julie, of Audubon; by 25 grandchildren; by six great-grandchildren; by three brothers: Warren Wegner, of Des Moines; Donald Wegner, of Des Moines; and Frank Wegner, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; by two sisters: Judy Wegner, of Des Moines and Lucille, Mrs. Maynard Thompson, of Eagle Grove, Iowa; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
