Mrs. Wheeler Passes Away.
Mrs. Mary Matilda (Ryel) Wheeler was born at Denmark, Lewis County, New York, May 31, 1861, and died at Manning August 28, 1908, aged 47 years, 2 months and 28 days. She was the daughter of George Peter Ryel, who was born in Lewis county, New York, September 27, 1823; and Huldah Ryel, who was born in Lyden County New York, January 16, 1830.

When a few years old her parents, with their family, moved from New York state to Maquoketa, Iowa, where they lived on a farm for about eight years. They then moved to the city and engaged in the hotel business. While her parents were living there Mary Matilda was married to George H. Wheeler, January 23, 1884. This union was blessed with three children, Ryel Herbert, born at Salida, Colorado, July 28, 1885, Louella Alice, born at Avoca, Iowa, February 19, 1887, and Leland George, born at Avoca July 31, 1888.

These three young people, who have been living with their mother in Manning for the past eight years, are left to mourn her loss. Of her father's family her parents died at Maquoketa some years ago and three sisters and one brother survive her, Rosko G. Ryel, of Geneva, Nebraska; Mrs. Eugene Post, of Gate, Washington; Mrs. Oscar Spencer and Miss Fannie A. Ryel, of Maquoketa, Iowa.

Mrs. Wheeler has been a sufferer for the past twelve years, much of the time unable to leave her home. She did not mingle largely in the life of the community about her, but bore her suffering with great patience and used all the strength that she had to promote the welfare and happiness of her family. By her economy, careful management and neatness she made home beautiful for her children. She gave them good books to read and personally assisted them in their studies until they had each completed their high school course. The children feel that no one ever had a better mother. These children have repaid her devotion with loving fidelity. All who are acquainted with the family will realize that the most beautiful monument to her memory is to be seen in the intelligent and upright character of her daughter and sons. A good Mother seldom attains the renown which this world gives. Her biography must be read in the lives of those she has cherished and loved.

"A mother's love, how sweet the name!
What is a mother's love?
A noble, pure and tender flame.
Enkindled from above.
To bless a heart of earthly mould;
The warmest love that can grow cold.
This is a mother's love."

The funeral services were conducted at the home of the family by Rev. A.L. Golden, assisted by Rev. F.A. Heizer. The remains were laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery. The attendance of many friends and beautiful floral offerings testified to the general esteem for Mrs. Wheeler.

The following friends and relatives from a distance were present at the funeral: R.G. Ryel and his daughter, Maude, of Geneva, Nebraska; Oscar Spencer and daughter, Birdie, of Maquoketa, Iowa; Mrs. W.W. Wheeler and Lake Wheeler, of Harlan; Mrs. A.E. Pierce, of Neola, Iowa, and Mrs. Harry Stone, of Omaha.
