Mrs. Summerville Rites Are Held
Our community was rather shocked, Thursday morning when the sad news spread of the sudden death of Mrs. Robert Summerville Sr., of this city. Mrs. Summerville had been in the best of health up to a few days prior to her death. A week before that she decided to visit with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. George Carsten in Carroll. After a few days she returned and soon became seriously ill.

Mrs. Summerville had a noble Christian character, having been a devout member of the Presbyterian Church since her youth. In her younger days she gave unstintingly of her time, energy and means to advance the cause of Christianity. She was beloved by all who were privileged to know her.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mary L. Jenkins was born on March 31, 1852 at Belvidere, Illinois. When she was four years old her parents moved to near Savannah, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood.

She was united in marriage on March 21, 1872, to Robert Summerville at Freeport, Illinois. She went immediately to the farm home which her husband had prepared for her.

In 1879 the couple moved with their two children to Harrison County, Iowa. In 1892, they moved to a farm southeast of Manning. The family moved to Manning in 1912.

Seven children were born to this union, one of whom died in infancy. Mr. Summerville preceded his wife in death April 1, 1921.

Mrs. Summerville was baptized and united with the church when she was four years old, and had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manning since 1916.

A woman of remarkable health and stamina, Mrs. Summerville was stricken shortly before Christmas, and passed away peacefully at her home on First Street, Thursday morning, December 30, having gathered all her children home once more. She was 85 years, 8 months, and 29 days of age.

Those who mourn her passing include her six children, Mrs. Elizabeth Quantz of Ogden, Iowa; David of Ladysmith, Wisconsin; Robert of Pine Knott, California; Emma, Mrs. George Carstens of Manning; William of Gray, Iowa; and Mrs. Laura Nellis of Early, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and her many friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon from the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. George E. Steel officiating. Interment was made in the Manning Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Conrad T. Dietz, L.L. Hockett, Dwight W. Patton, Julius Wehrmann, Henry E. Meyers, and Carl Hagedorn.
